Thank you for this! I'm just now starting to do this even though we are halfway through the first semester! My fifth graders are out of order, and it's not their fault. Hopefully, this fixes everything and keeps them organized, and helps them understand their notes better.

So how do you know exactly how much space you'll need for each activity in your notebooks? I'm assuming you started out one year filling in things as you went and then after that were able to say exactly what activity went on what page? It seems a little overwhelming for someone who's never done one before.. help! :-)

Tiffany- my first year was truly trial and error. I found that for most lessons I was using 2 pages (a left and a right) for the input and output. When I teach my lessons that is what I use, I don't pre-complete the Table of Contents but rather update it as I go so that it isn't an issue.

Hello, can you show one of your student's notebooks like a sample...I would love to see where the students take their notes, I have seen other videos that you have made like the Update one. I did start it last year and then fell off the wagon, my students loved it but I didn't keep up with it because it was kind of hard to put everything on it. Thanks in advance

Hi Jennifer! I, too, was wanting to see what the student input pages looked like? I have purchased 2 of the TEKS aligned bundles recently, and since I'm a first -timer, I would really appreciate some examples. Thanks for all that you do!, Sade'

Good Ideas! I like the organisation system, but personally, don't believe you should be grading students on colourfulness and creativity/the appearance of their notebook. (because those are subjective topics and unnecessary when teaching maths)

Laura, Thank you for your comment. The research behind why Interactive Notebooks work to build retention is due to the color and applications that student provide as a part of their learning. They are more likely to remember the notes that they have written when they are colorful, have memorable "doodles", etc. When recalling that information at a later date is serves as a memory device to connect their learning and apply it as necessary just as any mnemonic device would also do. @@smithcurriculumconsulting I hope you make allowances for kids with dysgraphia. I got an "A" in 7th grade math, but if I'd been graded on handwriting or drawing I probably would've barely scraped by.

Hunter 30000 Students were never graded on their handwriting but more on the completion of the activity given to their ability level. There was always plenty of time given to complete items outside of class as well. Drawing isn’t a component of the grade either.

It’s really heartbreaking how much focus is put on grades. Sounds like you enjoyed giving zeros and wait for so much time to pass to go back and see work not completed. This should be fun for kids and they would enjoy it more if it wasn’t graded. Teachers today aren’t teachers, and kids have completely lost all love for learning. The grading so heavy should be nonexistent, not only does it mentally blocks the child’s excitement but emotionally it’s a heavy one. Kids should be kids and not treated like they’re in jail with good grades and behavior then they’re rewarded. Some kids are shy, some have a lot going on at home, some may be nervous etc, a classroom should be an escape from all bad and instead sounds like it’s a nightmare. Do better!

An interactive notebook is a students notes and work that they are doing and therefore it is something they are building based on knowledge. Grades are more of a completion and if they did what was expected. Color is based on the level deemed appropriate by the student and that is modeled for them each and every day. Nothing about this treats them as if they are in jail but rather gives them an organized manner in which to keep track of their learning.
