I love lutris so far, makes the migration a lot easier, I remember my first attempts at Linux on an old laptop, it was under powered and had to do a lot of manual wine set up for stuff like XI. Also love the cross over between FF MMO add on devs and Linux support xD XIV I noticed has the quick launcher as an RPM on fedora that seemed to work, just my GPU vRAM is toast for 3d apps on that machine. XI was one of the first things I got (Mostly) working myself. It's great to look under the hood just because, while I do copy paste scripts, being able to dig in and actually learn how to do it myself so I can peak through, say lutris scripts, and figure out how people got it working is awesome.

I wonder if i can configure the game on Bottles and then add the final path to lutris so i can more easily get those overlays to work. Hmm probably worth investigating. I heard Bottles has a better way of configuring wine prefixes and bottles. Thanks for the info! and thanks for getting me on fedora!

I would highly recommend Bottles instead, its "sandboxed" by default, and runs perfectly.

Hey, Chris. I've been watching a bunch of your videos the last few months. I've learned so much! I've been inspired by you to do more stuff with Linux after discovering your channel. I've pretty much modified my windows 10 as much as possible, so I would like to try also installing Linux on the new computer I'm building. It will be fun to learn more about it in my spare time, and videos like this are very interesting to me. I have to admit, before checking out stuff on your channel I didn't know you could really play games in Linux. I haven't decided which version of Linux to install, but I plan to use your videos and website to learn more along the way. Pretty awesome you are a Final Fantasy fan, too. I haven't played XI in years, but I have fond memories of the game. Anyways, I don't usually comment, but I just wanted to say thanks!

nice to see a fellow taru taru player :* are the US, EU and Asia servers still merged and can you even find a group in final fantasy XI these days? i mean i even had trouble with this when the game was new. i sometimes spent hours sitting in selbina looking for a group. at least the background music was nice there ^_^° also: i still got the final fantasy XI installation CDs in the original box...

Yeah fairly easy with a good Linkshell. You also have the option of trusts now, so you can call forth a full party with these NPCs and they do a pretty good job. A real player is still better, but you'd be shocked with the amount of content you can do with them.

Honestly I used to be very good at getting Wine working with just about anything. These days it's madness. Can't set up a wineprefix to save my life. And truth be told I just copy the lutris profile for League of Legends and install my other junk in it at this point.

@@motoryzen gues you didnt read my comment so let me say it again."linux gaming isn't ready for MAINSTREAM".(meaning not for the general non geek gaming audience)take a guess as to how many of those old games worked on windows with no tweeks.pls do gues...it was 10 out of 10.since 7 out of 10 worked on linux with no tweeks and valve has more than 3000 games working on steam i would say gaming on steam is very much possible and dooable.just jumping through hoops like chris did in this video for obscure games isnt ideal for someone that just wants to game and not break the matrix just to get to that.

It is using wine, the benefits to using lutris is ease of use along with you can choose the runner. So you want wine 4.10 or 3.7 or some custom verison its all setup very easily within lutris itself. That all said, sometimes I still drop to terminal and just specific the prefix with WINEPREFIX and use what Lutris already built or if it can't sometimes I built it first in terminal and then import the bottle into lutris for ease of use.
