1-If your words could damage a friendship.
Proverbs 16:28 - A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.
17:9 - Whoever covers an offense seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates close friends.
2-When you do not have all the facts.
Proverbs 18:13 - If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.
John 7:51 - Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?”
3-When you have not verified the story.
Deuteronomy 17:6 - On the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses, the one who is to die shall be put to death; a person shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness. Numbers 35:30 - “If anyone kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the evidence of witnesses. But no person shall be put to death on the testimony of one witness.”
4- When you are tempted to make light of holy things.
Ecclesiastes 5:2 - Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth.
Deuteronomy 5:11 - “‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.”
5- If the issue is none of your business.
Proverbs 14:10 - The heart knows its own bitterness, and no stranger shares its joy.
26:17 - Whoever meddles in a quarrel not his own is like one who takes a passing dog by the ears.
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 - Aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.
6- If your words will damage someone’s reputation.
Proverbs 16:27 - A worthless man plots evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire.
6:12-15 - A worthless person, a wicked man, goes about with crooked speech, winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, points with his finger, with perverted heart devises evil, continually sowing discord; therefore, calamity will come upon him suddenly; in a moment he will be broken beyond healing.
7- If your words will be a poor reflection of the Lord.
1 Peter 2:21-23 - For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
