Definitely like the top over the dress on you. It was well worth the extra time to sew a toile. Your Japanese fabric is so beautiful. I would have been disappointed for you had you not tested out the pattern.

I just made a skirt from the same book in my Mardi Gras fabric and it’s too small, despite making the right size for my measurements. I have enough fabric to make a second skirt but what a waste of time. I should have made a mock-up first!!

I totally agree with mock up if you are unsure. I get thrifted fabric or nice bed sheets and make my mock up most of the time I end up keeping them too really saves a lot. Thanks

Thanks for the heads up.. I think I will do a mock-up, too.. the tracing isn't as bad as a Burda..lol hail to a muslin.. it really is worth it.

I now firmly believe in the muslin for non-commercial patterns. Better to know in advance.

Definitely the top over the dress. I've recently started making toilles for the same reason of fit and style. It is more work but worth it in the long run. Can't wait to see you fnished top.

Great example of why mock-ups are worth the time😊 I have a stack of old sheets and table cloths from when I decluttered my linen cupboard - still going through it.

There is soooooo much of this that I didn't understand, especially the earlier part getting the patten onto the paper. I hear the voice of the teacher in the Peanuts cartoons. Two things I do know: top definitely preferable to the dress on you AND Clemmie is a very helpful little star. 😃

Something about mockups that I don't understand? Should the muslin be similar to the fabric that you're going to sew? I understand that most people use bedsheets for mockups, but the final garment can look very different depending on the fabric used. Is a bedsheet mockup good indicator for a denimcorduroy garment?

I don’t think a bedsheet would be a good indicator. I’d use a stiffer fabric, like a heavy weight muslin to get a better idea of the end result.

I didn’t realize how bad it looked until I saw it on camera 😂 I want to like that style of dress but I need to just admit it looks horrible on me!

I have done the same thing - made something up that clearly wasn’t my style and I was so surprised that the sack dress looked like a, well, sack on me. Whodathunk?

The dress is awful!! It really makes me question if it’s the same pattern as the one shown in the photos in the book.
