What a beautiful dress! I grew up in the 70/80s and sewed my own Gunnesax shirt and blouse. I was so proud of it. I wore it once and washed it only to pull it out of the dryer covered in melted crayon, so I feel for your drink mishap. I also have mental heath issues and use sewing as a way to relax, but I feel for you using poplin. Save it for structured bottoms. I enjoy your channel very much and look forward to you next year. Happy Holidays!🧵🪡

I was a teenager in the 70s & wore Gunne Sax dresses. Clothing had more structure then, I think the armscye was cut smaller. The snug shoulder helps keep the bodice from gaping along that wide neckline. Loved your video! Happy Holidays!

It came out so pretty! You should try Oxi clean. I'm very clumsy and spill lots of tea! A bucket of hot water and a scoop of Oxi has saved me lots. Just don't use it on silk . It be safe I only use it on cotton and polyester

I treat stubborn stains with a fels-naptha bar then wash again it helps a lot when used with oxy.

FYI, Oxiclean can be degrading and quite harsh on fabrics. Try using a bit of fels-nap-tha on the stained area and wash according to fabric care tags (i use this on stains set in on vintage garments).

Though it sucks having to majorly unpick a lot of work, I think it was the best choice. The lace trim is much more readable and pops on the blue accents. Really great work!

Gunne Sax dresses were always my favorites growing up-- they make you feel like a storybook princess! I even wore one for my wedding. I love your dress so much! You may wish to try scrubbing the stain with a Fels Naptha soap bar (find in the laundry supplies section of the grocery store.) That often works for me when nothing else does.

I wore a Gunny Sack long dress for my wedding dress. I also made a dusty blue with fusty pink flowers and dusty green leaves. It was a long formal type. Had to wear formals once a month.

Such a great project. Well done for persevering and getting it finished. I'm watching on Christmas Day in Australia and its 28 degrees and very humid. So the icy white and pale blue is much appreciated. Hope you have some time to rest and relax over the holiday break and I'm really looking forward to all your projects and hauls and fun stuff in the new year. Never use hot water for stains. Always use cold water. Or tepid/lukewarm at most. That way you can almost try a different method if the stain hasn't shifted. If you dye it it will only dye the stain as well. I think the 70s fit was just narrower in general because even as a teenager (with wide shoulders) patterns didn't always fit right, despite the fact that we wore most of our clothes tight.

I wore Gunne Sax dresses back in the 70's, because I am old...and I've been sewing for a long time. You might want to try the Fels Naptha. There is also a soak on the market made for old quilts (try looking in fabric shops) that might take out the stain. Something else, if the stain didn't come out when you wash it, DON'T dry it, it'll set the stain! The person earlier who said the armscye was probably smaller was correct. As a person with fat arms (our family just has fat arms, it's a trait, unfortunately), I've learned to adapt clothes to make room for them. If a garment is already finished, and is too tight in the arms, you can open up the seams underneath the arm and the side seam for an inch or two each way from the intersection, and add a diamond-shaped piece of fabric for a gusset to add some room to move your arm. I'm not sure about how to explain this, but I'm sure there's information out there somewhere, explaining in detail how to add an underarm gusset. Good luck! The dress is beautiful, by the way!

I didn't ever have patterns fit my shoulders in the seventies if they fit me elsewhere. I had to buy bigger patterns, take them in, and have a little sloppy fitting in my garments because I wasn't very good at fitting in my twenties! I love how that dress turned out! It is beautiful. I use Oxi on stains like that; it at least makes them lighter. Maybe it's good to have a dress to eat all the things in, though!

Oxiclean is good for stains. I have used the dollar store version to completely remove bloodstains from various cotton flannel cloths, even a white one. I soaked the cloths overnight in a bucket of cold water with the generic oxiclean dissolved in it. Most or all of the bloodstains would be gone by morning. I then washed them in the washing machine which cleaned the cloths and removed any residual stains. The colors on the cloths were not affected. Only the bloodstains were removed.

Haley, I was 18 in 1978 and YES YES YES the shoulders were ALWAYS too tight on just about all of the garments making body issues so severe you just can't imagine!!!! let's just say the only good thing I can say about the whole decade of the 70's was I survived, so the 70's fashions, especially from the real patterns not re-imagined ones I have never liked, they were made for twiggy small shouldered girls....I didn't deal with the arm holes, had severe body issues and wore plaid shirts and men's t-shirts which made the body issues even worse....never felt feminine......hate the 70's. never want to go back in any shape form or fashion....only the music if bearable.!!!
