Within the city of Seymour, three key improvement projects have been identified, which, once implemented, will make a powerful impact on the community. An identity statement at the I-65 Interchange, an arrival park at the entrance to the downtown, and a site enhancement design at Freeman Field Park.
The interchange of 65 and 50 is a great location to invite new visitors into Seymour with the creation of an identity statement. Due to the large expanse of land, visibility and intrigue from 65 is difficult to achieve with signage alone. Instead, a large-scale landscape installation is proposed to draw travelers off the interstate.
Traditional brick towers will flank Highway 50 providing a city landmark and an enhanced front door image for local businesses and industries. As visitors pass through this entrance way, they will understand they have arrived somewhere worth exploring further.
Sidewalk and landscape improvements will give the Highway 50 corridor consistent features that will pull visitors from I-65 toward downtown. The grain elevators provide the perfect canvas to display interchangeable graphic banners of some of Seymour's greatest as a landmark for the location of the downtown.
The existing approach to Downtown Seymour along 50 gives visitors the unsightly view of an open rail yard and the back side of several buildings. The proposed arrival park concept gives a grand first impression and creates a functional open space park for the community. It will be clear to visitors that they have entered a downtown with character and class, while inspiring city pride in local residents.
This ideal location, just one block from downtown, provides the accessibility, public parking and open space needed to become the central gathering area for the Seymour community.
A traditional archway will frame a view of the arrival park and the community pavilion. Landscaping, lighting, and brick columns will shape this proposed public green space. Farmers markets, local festivals, outdoor concerts, and other events will use this venue as a multi-functional, centrally located space. The aesthetic image of the area will not only improve, but also set a standard for future private development.
Freeman Field is an underutilized asset that, once renovated, will promote both active and passive outdoor recreation within the City of Seymour. A multi-use trail is proposed to run the perimeter of the park providing a recreational outlet for spectators of sporting events as well as a destination for walkers, runners, and bikers.
By increasing the number of playing fields, restroom and concession stand facilities, this amenity will be set up to host tournaments for local and regional teams. A large additional parking area and handicap accessible pathways will help manage large tournament events. The addition of a much needed dog park will be well used by residents, and conveniently connect to the park by the trails.
All fields will receive under drain improvements to keep the playing surfaces at ideal conditions throughout the spring, summer and fall seasons.
The Seymour Gateway project... instilling pride in local residents and giving visitors a first impression worth exploring further.
