Good god this is beautiful. I lost it at 0:18 when I first watched this a few months back. It sounds like it was climbing up some giant SF hills. Ninja Bus Fan ClassicTVMan1981X

Yup! AC Transit had 35, 40, and 60 foot versions of these as models D35, D40, D60. See video response that I have posted. It is a recording on board an Ex-AC Transit NFI D40 currently running in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada

It would be my guess that they retired that particular fleet in 2004 . These were good buses and I rode on many of them .

No they were gone by the later half of 2007. I remember riding one one the 28 19 ave route for the last time before they were retired then torn apart at the scrap yard.

So apparently S.F. Muni got these D40HF around same time as Toronto TTC received their D40HF ( 6400 Series) from 1988-89

Excellent recording (probably the best sounding D40HF with the DD/Allison combo I've come across). It must have been pulling a hill to start -- really nice demo of engine load and transmission action. Props on getting a mid-hill downshift!

Even better with a Voith ZF Transmission it changes gears a lot quicker with a engine for an example a 1990 Orion V bus .

Thomas Malone Yes the 1990 D35s were Cummins L10 and ZF HP-590s but the 1992 D35s were 6V92 like unit 8804 here except they have Allison V731 transmissions instead.
