the reason why they find the ship important is because the japanese currently only trade with the portugues and no other country so that they wont have much choices to make nor bargain but if others steps in, the regent lords will stand to lose alot and the portuguese will feel threaten

Honor is everything - superficial honor anyway. What you do in the shadows, what you believe in your heart can be completely different from the face you show to the world. But if you tarnish your face in a way that can't be overlooked - your honor is gone, your family is disgraced (even the infants), and the only way to gain back some semblance of honor is how you choose to die. Death is nothing to be afraid of - it's a release or escape from the trials of living. For those left behind, of course it's a sad parting, especially if the one who died was tricked or manuevered into it, or they made a glaring and embarrassing error. Still, those who live on through a...loophole, like Mariko and Fuji, still feel the shame/dishonor. Being forced to stay alive is worse punishment for them than dying would be. If someone of Toranaga's status goes down, every lord and lady beneath him will need to go down with him. All the samurai who survive will become ronin if they don't choose to commit seppuku along with their lord. He cannot move until he is certain he has a fighting chance to win because he does appreciate his loyal people. What he can do in the meantime is maneuver, play politics, keep his face honorable, and wait for any opportunity to improve his odds. But for now, it's hard to completely blame Yabushige for wanting todetach himself and maybe even move up the ranks on his own. It seems almost certain that Toranaga is about to die. So, the Portuguese have held a monopoly on trade with Japan and China, because no one else knew the correct route to get there. They've spread Catholicism and are seeking to use that to gain influence over the rulers. Blackthorne's ship stole a copy of the rutters - the guide to safely sailing around the tip of Africa into the Pacific and the Protestant Dutch gov't has given them permission to attempt the trip, establish their own trade agreements, and if they destroy a bunch of nasty Catholics along the way, more power to them. Blackthorne's crew are not "guests" in any way. They are intruders, trespassers, maybe-invaders, or at the least unwanted strays. And they stink, have lice, and don't brush their teeth, lol - barbarians. The Japanese don't owe them any courtesy, rights, or care. We'll see if Blackthorne can earn them some respect. If you want a pirate show, there's always Black Sails.

John Blackthorne is based on William Adams, an English sailor from Gillingham, Kent. Adams would arrive in Japan in 1600.

@@TheNerdyverse-DannyReacts Definitely worth it! First season is a little shaky but with the following seasons as the budget increases and the actors settle into their roles it becomes outstanding.

Killing yourself is part of Japanese culture but then we also saw Blackthorn's captain do the same thing at the start of the episode

What do you mean why treat guest like this?? He's a pirate and he was NOT invited. Why would you like a guy that comes to someone else's country and talks trash about the people? Meh

@@TheNerdyverse-DannyReacts British people living in Japan are working to commemorate Anjin's achievements, and they write that everyone in Japan was kind to Anjin, and they are angry that this drama is degrading Japanese people. This is based on a story by a person who wrote a book called Shogun. I guess it's a setting where Japanese people can't go unless they're barbaric.

@@smari3290this is based on history. It is not entirely accurate ofcourse since this is a story but for the love of life itself please stop romanticizing Japan it's really disrespectful. Japan is a real country. Every country has their pros and cons and the 1600s was violent in every country around the world. Both sides thought each other savages and that fact is confirmed by history. The Japanese don't look any worse during this time than any other country. The cultures are simply different to the West and Blackthorne's first very real culture shock shows just how much weight are placed on different values by each side.

Didn't samurai kill Christian Japanese? It's strange that the emperor doesn't appear in this Japanese historical drama.
@wuthebest

At the exact time of episode 1 - Christians were somewhat tolerated, it's only later that they're specifically banned and executed. There is no adult emperor, the emperor is a child that has a regency of 5 men, which is what the meeting at the beginning of the episode is about. And the drama is based on a book that isn't 100 percent historical in any case.

Basically Japanese Emperors have had no political and military power after AD1200. They have been religious symbols.

The emperor wasn’t important at this time. It was the Samurai Daimiyo that held power across the lands. The emperor is just a figure head.
