Buntaro kneeling and apologising is the truest sign of the manners, customs and traditions of their culture above everything else. Earlier in the show you're made to believe that the mother of the young boy is either 1. Being protected by toranaga under the guise of visiting her pregnant relative or 2. Toranaga actually DID take her hostage to try and gain an upper hand. But this episode I believe reveals the reason, toranaga took her because she is actually a major threat and looks to usurp the council as a whole
@chrissmart7639

It benefits Toranaga for the council to attack first. She's goading them. Either its been conspired with by her and Toranaga or not. "Tatarigami" is a term from Japanese mythology and folklore. It refers to a vengeful spirit or deity that causes calamities, disasters, or misfortunes as a form of divine retribution. The word "tatarigami" itself can be broken down into "tata" meaning "to strike" or "to hit," and "kami" meaning "god" or "spirit." In Japanese folklore, it is believed that these tatarigami can manifest from objects or places that have been mistreated or neglected, such as abandoned shrines or objects of great significance. These spirits then bring misfortune upon those who have offended them or their associated places or objects.
@ホカホカサンシャイン

With a slight modification, "tatarigami" can be divided into "tatari," a conjugational variant of "tataru," meaning that a god, Buddha, or grudge spirit causes a disaster, and "Gami," a phonetic variant of "Kami," meaning god.

@@eatsmylifeYT the pheasant is an honorable personal gift from Toranaga to Blackthorne, to which he is his hatamoto, basically he is an honored representative for Toranaga. Blackthorne simply hang it out to "dry" so that he can prepare a nice meal for the household, which is his good intention. The household and its tenants, however, indirectly insulted Lord Toranaga in 3 ways: 1. They threw away the pheasant (the gift) and disrespected the hatamoto's wishes. This is actually the last straw. 2. They accused and insulted a noble's hatamoto for bringing in a tatarigami, which is a spirit of destruction and calamity who is summoned by bringing dishonor to respected nobles. The only way to appease the spirit is by apologizing to the noble, in any way. 3. Buntaro's pettiness broke the harmony and peace in the hatamoto's own home. As a result, a giant landslide happened, caused massive destruction to the village and almost wiped out Toranaga's army. Blackthorne basically appeased the tatarigami by offering his swords, formerly Fuji's late father's who is Toranaga's best and most trusted generals, to Toranaga, as a consequence Blackthorne's household is relatively safe as well as Fuji. The death of the gardener would be the plot device needed for Blackthorne to mature in the sense of responsibility and the weight of his words and actions. We got to know and love him as this foul-mouthed, smack-talking privateer; something drastic needed to happen for him to start to grow into and play the part of the increasing position of honour and responsibility he is occupying. Side note: dry aging pheasants by hanging it for a week or so with its feathers is a thing, as it softens the meat of wild game and improves the flavour. In the meantime, Fuji (best WAIFU, fight me) apparently was aware of the thing between him and Mariko (Yes it was Mariko who went and did the yobai with John on the previous episode) , and still does his best to serve. so when Buntaro came back (I was actually surprised how early he revealed he was alive, and not the fact he was alive), she asks Mariko to tell her if ever his host was in danger (subtext, if Buntaro were to lash out to john in anger if and when he finds out about the infidelity) as she is duty bound to protect the Hatamoto. that drinking contest, which is usually a form of male bonding, really wouldn't get Buntaro and Blackthorne to be closer together, as the latter got to transparent in showing her affection for Mariko; even the whole shooting thing was very telling as John shows his concern for Mariko openly in a culture where propriety takes precedence over anything, thus the beating. Next comes the whole 4D chess that's happening with Toranaga handling things in the aftermath of his son's blunder. Genius. He used it as an opportunity to 1. teach his son an important lesson; 2. flush out whoever manipulated his son to action; 3. pit Yabushige against his nephew Omi by having the uncle tell his nephew that the young guy was to take control of the artillery regiment instead of him. (Side note, i think Kiku is also an informant for Tornaga 74% sure) then near the end there's that cute part where Toranaga was SOOOOOOOO not interested to mediate on the bickering or whatever problem he sensed between Mariko and Blackthorne, considering how commited John was to get his aid against the Catholics to just ask to be set free to leave Japan permanently. Then there's the whole power move of Ochiba-sama as soon as she arrived in Osaka and talking to Ishido.
@treehouse1998
7 ай бұрын
Another note on the 4d chess, I wonder if it was set up by Toranaga because clearly yabushige was looking for the spy and the gardener was killed due to disobeying blackthornes instructions. Toronaga tells the actual spy to 'find someone', perhaps the gardeners death was meant to throw them off?
@khaii13
7 ай бұрын
@@treehouse1998 the Gardener's death was convenient for the samurai spy (Toranaga named him in a scene where they meet, but i cant seem to remember that one name specifically for the life of me), as, remember he was offering to surrender himself--probably to keep another spy hidden (im guessing Kiku)--but was ordered to procure another "spy" to be discovered instead. The fact that there was an earthquake, and the gardener serving under John just died the day before, made it easy for him to plant evidence and throw Yabushige and co of his scent as he was ordered to.

Meat in general is usually dry aged for longer than that before selling it. It has to be aged in some way to make it tender, since it will stiffen soon after slaughter, but consumers are accustomed to the flavour of aged meat, as with wine and cheese (compared to fresh cheese) and cured meats, so in many countries it is normally aged further. Indeed, game meat can be overly tough and unpalatable, even fresh as can be, so aging suits it well.
@khaii13
7 ай бұрын
@@skyworm8006 yep, i even had to google that since i was like “why is he hanging a pheasant with feathers like that? There is a koan about the real people that these characters are portraying about being given a bird that does not sing and being asked what they would do with the bird Oda Nobunaga (Lord Karoda) says "Kill It" Toyotomi Hideyoshi (The Taiko) says "convince it to sing" Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toronaga) says "wait"

Was John even intending to eat that rotten bird at some point? was rotten bird an actual edible food item for the English back in the day? if so, how was that even possible?

For Toranaga to scend to the position of Shogun, the heir needs to die one way or another. Whether he dies of natural cause, killed by his mother, the council or Toranaga is to be seen.

Oh my! My thoughts were: There's turmoil, no inner peace...may be these characters 'unlearn' from that "tapping" into *Eightfold Fence* as adults - with true emotions unfolding! Then: Andrew *"But I guess it's for the greater good."* Yep, what a mixed bag of sacrifice and redemption. Natural disaster balances everything out too perhaps.

The interesting thing about the son's actions is that Toranaga is still able to take advantage of it; it wasn't necessarily a bad plan. What was bad was that the son was so easily manipulated into taking the fall for it. Toranaga is disappointed by his stupidity, not the outcome.

Opening scene... I believe that would be a proper usage of the word "butchery." So well done and realistic. Not unlike stacking meet in a slaughter house. "Hey Rocky. You're breakin' the ribs."

I get that Japan is a harsh country and you need to be strong to live there, ESPECIALLY with the earthquakes! I just can’t get over how ancient Japanese culture had such respect for death while having very little respect for life.

They value / appreciate the concept of "impermanence." They even have a word for it -- wabi-sabi -- which is strongly tied to their Buddhist traditions.

The drama exaggerates samurai culture. No one would kill a gardener without checking with Anjin. If a man commits disrespect at Osaka Castle, only he will die. His baby will not be killed. Family members are killed when committing serious crimes such as Akechi's rebellion. Even if foreigners drift into Japan, they will not be killed. Historically, Anjin and his companions were not killed. During this period, the Emperor and the nobles were in Kyoto. Their culture is different from Samurai culture. Samurai culture is not the only Japanese culture.

Idk compared to how we’ve seen men of this time treat women regarding sex. She might actually find pillowing with John better since we’ve seen his respect towards them means it’s more enjoyable. As a man I hate the idea of men forcing themselves on women and being aggressive in pillow time.

Fuji is the epitome of doing one's duty. She absolutely detests Blackthorne's presence and having to serve him... but she's damned good at her job. Her feelings about Anjin has no place and despite being Mariko's cousin-in-law and best friend and Mariko being the victim of the abuse, she was yelling at Mariko to leave because her shenanigans with Buntaro disrupted the peace of her master's home. She's a BOSS and the perfect assistant to Anjin. Despite the mutualness between Anjin and Mariko... i actually hope some feelings happen between Fuji and Blackthorne. But one thing to keep in mind, she was already married to a young samurai and had a child, and lost both. It would take quite a bit for her to move on to accept Anjin as the next chapter in her life. In other words, she's probably in emotional hell being Anjin's consort. But she really is the MVP here absolutely. It'd be nice for her to get a positive resolution that doesn't involve her death. Mariko on the other hand.... death may be the best outcome for her. Even if Buntaro died and she and Blackthorne became an item, she still will be a societal outcast because of her dad.

I think saying that Fuji detests Blackthorne is a bit harsh. She doesn't find him physically attracted at all, and definitely thinks he's an oaf and a brute. But I don't think she hates him as a person?
