They went from saying "we have no plans for further seasons, it was always meant to be a limited series" to announcing season 2 and 3 at the same time. So shameless

I recommended this show to my dad and he watched original series from 1980 first by mistake and was quite lost when discussing it. It shares plenty of scenes so I only realized what's up after he said he watched all 8 episodes while 2024 one has 10. Original series had way bigger romantic plot, barely any political drama and Blackthrone was for sure the main character. They also decided to not subtitle Japanese speech so the viewer also feels like him, being permanently clueless without Mariko around to translate.

I assume this was recorded before the news came out that they are indeed doing multiple seasons. A real "oh no they dont know" vibe to a lot of the conversations.

It's funny to hear both guys say the show has "very little violence" (which may be true), but then listening to Bill Burr's screed about the show in which he says it is brilliantly done, but he tapped out after one episode because of the beheadings and a person being boiled alive slowly.

As far as I remember from reading the book 6years ago that version of Blackthorn and Mariko live happily in yabishiges land, starting their own dynasty. So if they would go in that direction the relationship makes sense, if they kill her off its pointless

Just to let you know, in the books Blackthrone and Mariako’s romance was quite a major theme throughout the book, esp during the return to Osaka from Edo where they spend many nights together, rather than the TV’s one night stand. Also, during the middle of the book when Blackthorn goes to the Tea house with Kiku, it is heavily implied that is when he and Mairako first sleep together (I believe, having not read it for a couple years!)

Who remembers the original TV adaptation of James Clavell's Shogun? Oh, right, no one. It starred Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune, and won three Emmys and three Golden Globes.

I remember it, and I am very sure that I am very far from the only one that remembers it. I am 52 years old. I watched the 1980s mini-series then I watched the 2024 mini-series then I read the novel I enjoyed the 1980 mini-series a lot more than I enjoyed the 2024 series, and that was because of Richard Chamberlain and Yoko Shimada in their roles as Blackthorne and Mariko. I liked their acting and their interactions with each other. I enjoyed the novel more than I enjoyed the 1980 mini-series. The love story was the main factor in why I love the 1980 mini-series and novel. I don't love the 2024 mini-series.

@@Bartleby1892 Well there was this and Roots. I just watched the trailer and some clips. It's certainly a bit hammier than the modern version primarily because of the typically melodramatic TV musical score and Richard Chamberlain's hair, but it doesn't look bad. Apparently available on the Internet Archive.

@@fomalhauto But did you re-watch the 1980 show? I wonder how it's holds up for adult you as compared to teenage you? Regardless, I watched some clips and it doesn't look bad. Where I'm going to fight these guys is when they start ridiculing Lynch's Dune as compared to the watery oatmeal and gruel slushy that Denis Villanueve considers a masterpiece.

I was the opposite of Doa on this show. It instantly hooked me, gripped me and really really compelled me, but unfortunately I felt it slightly lost itself toward the end.

at 16:30 you talk about Yabushiges death you've missed that Toranaga's line about "Why tell a dead man the future" is actually a callback to something Yabu said in ep 1 or 2, to his nephew about informing Toranaga of the European galley. This video explains it well: kzitem.info/news/bejne/s22erZWiqaZ1o5w IMO the smiles represent a satisfaction that Yabu now knows Toranagas secret heart. Toranaga smiles both that he can take some joy in sharing his success, but also that Yabushige is the last of his disloyal vassals (at least as far as we can see in the show). As Toranaga says "Some men are like hawks, just like Anjin and Yabushige"

I came into Shogun with high expectations due to ratings and word of mouth. It was good enough for me to watch within a week or so but nothing that struck me as special. I give it a 6.5 or 7 out of 10. PSA - If you haven't seen it, watch Black Sails.
