For people who may not know this is an adaptation of James Clavel's book Shogun. A fictionalized telling of the life of a real English sailor named Will Adams who arrived half-dead in Japan along with the remains of his crew during one of the most pivotal years in Japanese history: 1600. This was in the middle of a massive power struggle that would decide the future Shogun and fate of the country for centuries.

The original miniseries got me interested in Japanese culture and history when I was 8 years old. The show always aired at Christmas time and transported me, a nerdy German child that was super into knights and castles, into a different part and culture of the world with a totally different concept of knights and very different-looking castles. This was the 90s in East Germany and we didn't have the internet, satellite TV, anime or manga so this really blew my mind. It actually led me to studying Japanese Studies later, graduating with a Master's degree, and living and working in Japan for 1.5 years. I love this story and am beyond excited to see it adapted anew.

I do not know Hiroyuki Tanada's work but he has very big shoes indeed to fill those of Toshiro Mifune who played Toranaga in the 1970 miniseries. Clavell himself had a major role in that production and retained a large degree of creative control. It was very bit as brilliant as his masterwork novel so everyone connected with this production has a very high bar to match.

I've been trying to tell people for YEARS how amazing SHOGUN the novel is! It's not a small book but I devoured it my second year of uni. James Clavell wrote 5 or 6 more in this "series" all set at different points in history and different places (Iranian revolution, Founding of Hong Kong, Japanese ww2 pow camp, etc). The clash of cultures, empires, technology, religion... I'm curious what the vibe will be with this series, my hopes are through the roof though with this cast and the little peek at the cinematography here. I read the series while studying Mandarin abroad, so heres hoping they let me audition for Tai-Pan.

@@davidgill3356 It gets worse. They are all speaking in modern English. This destroyed immersion. In the original 1980 tv series the Japanese actors spoke feudal era Japanese with NO SUBTITLES. This was on purpose to put you the audience in the POV of Blackthorn who also did not understand them and was desperately trying to figure out what was being said by reading eyes/faces and body language. It turned even the most boring and mundane conversations into scenes where you were hanging on every word even when you didn't understand. Also Mariko in the original story was a very well written egalitarian character She used her physical weakness as a woman to her advantage because the men did not view women as a military threat so she could travel to places Toranaga couldn't go and spy on his enemies and relay important messages helping him to become the Shogun. Marika was also a much older married woman the actress playing her looks too young. Everything about this show reeks of ignorant modern progressives making what they think is an empowering feminist story that is in reality demeaning and insulting to women.

In the documentary The Making of 'Shōgun' it is stated that the rise of Japanese food establishments in the United States (particularly sushi houses) is attributed to Shōgun. @@SteventheShoehanger Japanese historians (like myself) consider the cultural and historical accuracy of Shogun about a 6 on a 10 scale. Medieval Japanese history is deep and the "time of samurai" romanticism of mid to late Tokugawa Japan as well as Neo-Confucianism having a very prominent role in Tokugawa Japan caused a lot of rewriting or reinterpretation of Sengoku Era and earlier event to better justify the military dictatorship. Toranaga is often pointed to be Tokugawa Ieyasu, but there is a fair amount of Oda Nobunaga in him as well. Shogun is an entertaining book, but the more you know Japanese History, the more flawed it becomes.

Stock markets and Russian spies - it is not bad, just not as much of a historical context as I would have liked. There's not one character in this show that doesn't grab and hold your attention. No one is just taking up space on the screen. If they are doing nothing they are doing something. I love this show and I can't wait to own it on 4k just so I can freeze it to really take in the visuals.

wtf? you know pictures exist right? freezing a show/ movie just breaks the way it's meant to be seen, cinematographers put in the work to express the beauty in motion. Watch it over and over and the scenes will bake to your brain. freezing/pausing mid watch is an odd way to enjoy a story with beautiful visuals.

I’m so freaking excited!!!! The version of this from 1980 was pivotal in my life. I was a young kid (6/7yr) and became obsessed with Japanese culture and clothing after watching it with my mom. Even learned my first few non English words from it. Ultimately I met a guy long distance/pen pal who, after getting to know him, I found out was Japanese American 😂 and we eventually got married. Now I have two kids- Shiori & Satoshi. And a life full of multi cultural joy. I can hardly wait to share this new version with my kids.

I read this book in High School and have always considered it the first book I ever read. It was the first one I read voluntarily and somehow came to understand it. It ignited within me a passion for Japanez culture and reading books, particularly historical fiction. I remember connecting with the characters and their relationships so closely, and my mind's eye had created this world and the people. It was as if I escaped and traveled, that's when books clicked with me. FX was once known for amazing shows (i.e. Sons of Anarchy, The Americans etc.). I imagine this retelling of Shōgun will only be loosely based on James Clevell's book. I just hope a great story and characters aren't sacrificed for "ideological elements" which has become too common in shows today and almost ruining them. This Shōgun could be a masterpiece and open a great story to a whole new generation. It certainly looks good based on the trailer.

Is this novel interesting? In Japan, Anjin Miura (William Adams) is a famous historical figure, not a character in a novel. He had two chances to return to his home, but he had a quarrel with sailors and didn't board the ship. He seems to have been a difficult and complicated person. Looking forward to the drama!

Disappointing, just the scenes of Japanese women acting like 'karatekas' shows how far a cry it is from the book which - though rightly accused of reeking orientalism historically - at least got many things right on Japanese culture of the time. And the wonderful and heartrendereingly difficult position of women, far from being the strong martial arts types shown in the trailer. It may fit 'modern audiences' who want to see 'strong powerful women' everywhere but it falls in line with the current trend of pissing on anything historical only because we need to adapt to our modern 'needs'. Madness, stick to the book which for all its flaws remains a classic. Or the 80s mini-series which at least got most of these things right (and which has not aged badly)

I thought that noble women WERE trained in using the Naginata to defend themself. And did participate in defending castles (although most time in support roles). And while certainly female warriors were rare or very rare (although i head an argument that according to remains found on battlefields they were probably more comman than thought) they (like female ninja/shinobi) were not unheard of... Certainly there were more than the few known cases.

@@1521Palm I have no exact number at hand. Named cases (of women actual fighting not only supporting the defense of a castle) were not so many. Although f. e. among the Ikko-Ikki (and the christian uprising in the early Tokugawa Shogunat women did participate by manning siege engines and even fighting in a certain numbers). If you want to read a (short but i. m. o. informative) book to this topic I recommend an Osprey-book Samurai Women 1184-1877. There was however the debate that many cases of acitve participation in fighting and battles were not recorded because it was considered as not appropriate for women.

@@1521Palm First they are certainly not "mine". I just wanted to mention that giving a female charakter good naginata fighting skills is not only caving in to any supposed "modern audience". I loved the old TV series (which were completely without such) but I am willing to give this a try. As long as not ANY woman in the film is an perfect Naginata-wielding badass (which would be a little bit much for my disbelief) I have no problems

There is only one book. There are other books in the "Asian Saga" but they all tell different stories. The one most closely related is Gai-Jin but that takes place more than 200 years later. You can see how the events of the past influence it but is not necessary to read Shogun to understand Gai-Jin. The other books don't even take place in Japan at all (though King Rat is in a WW2 Japanese POW camp).
