I am a Malaysian Chinese. When my sister got married, my dad didn't want anything. My bro in law insisted. In the end, he gave my dad rm688 (good fortune always) as a token. Real parents only want the best for their kids.

Same with me. Luckily nowadays most malaysian chinese doesn't want the dowry payment, and even returned most of the payment as a wedding gift if groom insisted to pay a large amount..for my case, We didn't even have wedding dinner, its our choice. But now our life is happy and stable, we have a house, car and a child.
I agree. In Europe and North America, it is the custom for the bride's father to pay for the wedding expenses, plus giving a dowry to the newly wed, such as a new car or a house down payment. I have never heard that the groom has to pay anything to the bride's family, except for the wedding ring and honeymoon expenses. In Taiwan, if the bride's father is a local Taiwanese, he usually will gift a piece of property fit for the groom's future clinic, if the groom is a medical student.
