The rise in prices is only temporary. What happens is that we made use of the USD as the basis of foreign trade. I believe all imports were paid in foreign reserves holdings where the rate of exchange is superior and is accepted by trade partners. However, to join BRICS we need to shed US treasury holdings and pay in local currency. Once the USD tumbles and no longer the reserve currency, SGD will rise in value which is currently AAA status. There is a new payment system apart from SWIFT is the QFS (Quantum Financial System) and gold backed and will be 1-1 in value to similar gold backed currencies.

I agree with this KZitemr that on a normal day, anywhere else, not just Shanghai, even Kuala Lumpur is better than Singapore as Singapore is way too expensive to live luxuriously for a middle income person. However, Singapore is a good place when you’re sheltering from catastrophic events, like Covid 19 as we have seen. Singapore have a top notch government with strong support from their people. Despite the devastating effects of Covid, the Singapore government managed to make sound decisions based on expert recommendations and steer the country towards a balance of ensuring people’s safety and securing livelihood. Singapore’s beauty shines during hard times, not during normal days. However, living within one’s means is important, so it’s perfectly fine for those who wants value for money to consider staying somewhere else.

Thanks for the comment. I am not sure "a good place when you’re sheltering from catastrophic events" is a major concern for most people though, after all, how many Covid-19 like event are we going to experience within our lifetime? After two months in Singapore, I quite like it and think I can get used to it even though it is not as convenient as Shanghai, but I understand it is getting harder and harder for a lot of people. The friend I mentioned in the video is a senior management in a fortune 500 company and she is feeling a lot of pressure from the 43% raised in rent. That said, it is a free economy so prices will rise and fall based on demand, when it gets too expensive, people will leave and price might come back down. Therefore, my conclusion is that Singapore is becoming a place for elites and those serving the elites.

@@老周横眉Due to US China trade war escalated to a serious level, many Chinese companies or US/European companies coming to Singapore to set up HQ. Because of Singapore status of neutrality, therefore these companies are benefited from "lubricant" in the friction of trade war.
