There's more than one way to have fun.
@huntercreed1
7 жыл бұрын
Well it's not a problem if everyone comes together in session 0 and agrees that they all just want to play a goofy game or if everyone wants to just have an overly quirky cliched group of heroes who wanna just goof off as murder hobos do. But when it's agreed upon that it will be a more grounded campaign and you get one or more players who put together some cliched and silly background it tends to harm the enjoyment of the players who don't want RavenSong Moonblade and his red-eyed dire panther who also shoots flames. Some players actually want an immersive game. Not every player will have fun with every group. There will be groups where the players just might not mix well because there are too many conflicting desires for the game. And that's fine, just find a group of people who are like-minded :)
@chrisgadd
7 жыл бұрын
huntercreed1 It's an imaginary elf game. There is no "grounded." 😂
@blahpunk1
7 жыл бұрын
In general I agree with you but... the a thing I'm beginning to learn is that the murder hobo style of play is common because it is the easiest. Placing several disparate PCs in a setting where they are likely to run into one another, have some rational reason to work together and are all connected to the setting in some way is actually pretty hard. The connection to the setting might be what is meant by 'grounded'. However I think you get from the experience, what you put into it. Also, comic book characters aren't the best analogy. They are normally lone wolf characters, while role playing PCs almost always act together as a team.
@chrisgadd
7 жыл бұрын
It's a game. As long as everyone's having fun playing the game, then it's a good game. The irony of this video is that the PCs in it look bored as hell when they're giving the "awesome" backgrounds for their characters, and a lot more passionate and energetic when they're giving the "sh*tty" backgrounds. :)

DaymoonNightsun Well I can attest, that the Dragonborn I have currently in development (saving stats for when it comes time to use her so other players can't accuse me of cheating rolls in case I luck out like with my Human Barbarian) is planned to be quite a happy-go-lucky character, so not all Dragonborn are edgelords either. By the way, I am relatively new to the game, so just curious what you would recommend in terms of getting the stats? At the moment I'm only getting them through the "roll 4d6, use highest 3" rule.
@apathymanthemundane4165
7 жыл бұрын
I suppose it depends on the kind of campaign you (or your GM) want. For instance, I usually use 4d6 picking the highest 3, much like you do. In these cases, I usually am playing more RP-heavy sessions where I'm not necessarily supposed to go fight a bunch of things. In more combat-heavy campaigns, my GM might let us roll 5d6, and keep the highest 3, if we're making hero-type characters who are notably above the norm. In the case of abject superhuman(noids), I might do 6d6, again, keeping the highest 3 rolls. Bear in mind, that these are to my preference, and I generally do a lot of class-less homebrewing, so these may not be everyone's preference, but there's my two cents.

To be fair theres a way to fix the 'rise of' campaigns, All that needs to be done isadd interesting moral dilemmas, like in a campaign where the villain was a rebel army of bandits and killers. When i had rinally introeuced the villain, a rather polite and charming man, named Golthor Malik, and had him explain his rather complex backstoryx the party finally got engaged, half wanted to join the rebel leader, and the other felt he was lying about his complex past. I won't go into too much detail , but the 'villain" wasn't evil, he wimply had misplaced rage at the unjust execution of his father. However since he didn't know who the person responsible was, he had become a warlord instear. And took it out on the kingdome as a whole.

My plan for a great DnD campaign- Hopefully I can find a group of experienced DnD players, after about a month of playing campaigns together, I’ll ask if I can be the GM, hopefully they’ll say yes, here’s the campaign I’m playing, “Journey into the Nether realm; A elderly man named “Ryan” comes to one of the players(hopefully one of them is holding a staff or a sword), he tells them he comes from a long lost land known as the “Nether Realm”, a literal hell filled with hordes of various creatures and monsters, it’s filled with dark towers, booming volcanos, and literal rivers of lavas, he only survived because of his brave and strong mother, she protected him with something known as the “Sword of The Nether”, the most powerful sword in both the earthly realm and the Nether Realm, But one day the sword was broken into 5 shards, the skeleton and the handle of the sword were the first, the one the player holding a sword has, he asks the group of heroes to enter the Nether Realm to grab the rest of the shards, but warns them of a great dark lord of evil, “An-Ry, the biggest, tallest, and terrible Goliaths of all time”, “An-Ry, the Terrible” for short, for if “An-Ry The Terrible” holds the handle of the powerful sword, he will be able to cross over to our realm and take over, and Ryan cannot enter the Nether Realm, for he is old and weak, after searching for the 4 shards they put all shards together and the sword magically puts itself back together, while trying to make another portal this time back to the Earth Realm, Ryan the elderly joins the group in the Nether Realm, if the group has good memory they’ll realize Ryan earlier said “he can’t go to the Nether Realm, for he is old and weak”, Ryan will than sinisterly laugh, as he grows to a 20 foot Goliath and from nowhere metal armor grabbed onto Ryan’s skin, he grabs the sword with a sinister grin saying “thanks, FOR I AM AN-RY THE TERRIBLE! what do you think An Ry is backwards for”? Before teleporting into the earthly realm, he uses the cosmic power from his newly crafted sword to turn one of the party members into a half dragon half human, like he stands on two legs, has hands, wings, scales, a head of a dragon, 15 foot,can breath fire, and has no control over what’s he’s doing for the dragon part of him is taking over, if the party either kills, cures, or gains some of his human mind in their former team member, they will travel back to the earthly realm, and have the almost impossible quest of killing An-Ry The Terrible, prison him, or at least de-powering An-Ry.” I feel like it’s cliched, does anyone have any feedback?

The beauty of D&D is that you can have a character who was raised by ducks and is a bardbarian with the totem of the duck, and still have an amazing time. You just have to know what you're doing and be a good mate to your fellow players, and you can even the most generic or riddiculous backstory into a fun character. There's nothing wrong with an evil empire vying for world domination, you just don't necessarily want to make stopping them the single-handed responsibility of the party. A low intensity or cold war type conflict between an 'evil empire' and a commonwealth of republics can make for an interesting setting.

The king of the kingdom where most of the story takes place believes they’re preparing for war, but soon go back underground, carrying back their dungeons. This conveniently occurs shortly before a great, Eldritch being from a realm even further then the far realm decides to fuck up shit with no understood purpose.

It is still hard justifying an 11"4 2900 lb murderer joining a party but my DM handeled it quite nicely

The first one wasn't an issue of characters not having anything to do with the setting or eachother, and everything to do with the characters not being set up to be social or interactive. They have no depth. The same issue arises with the lone wolf point, the problem is not a lone wolf background but a lone wolf character.
@SasamiTM

to be fair Sometimes and eclectic party can be fun, i know many a fun time is had by the mix of my gnome cleric and my buddy's 8 foot tall Minotaur barbarian, they have quite different.. perspectives on things. I would totally play Rise of the Eels, not even kidding. Weapon specialization: Trident here i come! I do like some sort of idea what's coming thought, once had a DM decide he wanted to play pirates half way through so our group of random chuckle heads just got shoved on a boat without a rank in sailing between all of us. On the other hand putting ranks into Sail r some other profession for roleplay reasons then never seeing another body of water bigger than a horse trough is also a pain Hey I just started a dark elf! To be fair he was deliberately made to be the anti-drow, he's cheerful, friendly, works as the night caretaker at the local church, drinks with his dwarf friend at the bar and actively tries to be as un-mysterious as possible. he does use a bastard sword thought but that's because of a certain forgotten realms deity. God i wish more DM's did this, actual environment for a fight instead of just square rooms and hallways. Lots of brutalist architecture in the fantasy realm apparently. I can only defend this in that most DM's i've played with give no shits when i hand them a backstory, or use it against me. Only so many times can you write out a long backstory of your ranger hunting the beast that killed his brother and it never comes up once or mention that despite his ruthless nature your rouge loves his mother deeply and have her killed off faster than a parent in a disney cartoon or that your Wizard can't wait to see his hometown after being off to magic collage and find it burned to the ground before "yeah i'm lonewolf mcdon'tgiveashit"

TIL that scars over the face are generic, but scars about the throat are original. Ok then. XD

Rise of the Bad DM. Raised by honeybadgers is hardcore though. Unfortunate that they don't care...

I may have a Tiefling as a character, but the people who play over-the-top characters like RavenSong Moonblade annoy me to no end.

I wouldn't call it shit d&d if the people playing it want role playing to take a backseat to dungeon delving, problem solving and character progression. Aka my group. We do a little roleplaying, but we don't get super deep into it. Edit: We do a lot of what they called awesome combat encounters.

1 my group is somewhere between, we usually have pairs or trio's of characters who link together, but the DM usually has a way to bring everyone together. 2, the campaign im in right now is closer the the generic. i have a campaign in mind, but im following a game based in forgotten realms i know, becausei have never actually... been... DM. character introduction midway is usually incorperated in some bizzare way, though usually it is a result of a PC death or getting bored of the character(like i did when i played 3 campaigns with almost the exact same character, i swapped one out, the DM played aroudn it quite well. "Insane dwarf riding a dire boar" because thats any different from a normal dwarf XD. i try to fall into the better backstory catigory, though when i was learning i ignored that in favor of learning basic game mechanics and how my character worked.

I can sense that the DM's girlfriend is in this and I can't understand a word she says. Hopefully I can find my balls to just leave. Hopefully we all don't live in the same house because then I can't.

Those initial characters seem to be loads of fun. Saying they are "Shit D&D" is essentially telling people: "Your fun is wrong"

the whole rise of the blank thing was unfair because new d&d players like acting out common fantasy troupes and for new design why not have a large conquest. It isn't that bad.

I feel this is more "Shit Player(s) that the DM won't restrain a bit."
