Shadow bands of the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse dead center of totality on snow in a forest break in eastern New Brunswick. They began 40 seconds before totality and then faded into shadow. They resumed at the end of totality and lasted another 40 seconds till it was bright again. Shadow bands are usually faint, but a plain of snow made a natural projection screen, and a low sun and the surrounding forest softened the light. This allowed them to show up unusually well, easily visible to the human eye. But shadow bands are low contrast and difficult to capture on camera, so I applied contrast composite techniques to bring them out. You can see them clearly racing across the forest glade. An interesting thing about shadow bands is you can only see them in motion. If you pause the video, they will vanish.
