I remember being a 10 year old kid playing Shadowman for the first time. Everything seemed like your typical N64 adventure until I opened Nettie's file and was both shocked and fascinated by its contents. It felt like I was reading about real events/people and that left me quite disturbed that someone could actually conceive such things. It also made facing each of them all the more intimidating knowing exactly what each one was capable of. Killing the Five didn't feel satisfying like defeating a boss in any other game. Instead, it felt "correct" as if I was obligated to purge something so vile from this world simply because it existed. An let's not forget the Fact that the protagonist, Michael, isn't exactly a great guy himself. A former hitman who is personally responsible for his entire family's death isn't the first thing you think of when you think "Hero". It was a deliberate choice by the developers to basically portray "evil vs eviler" as the conflict, and they did an excellent job of drawing the line between Moral Ambiguity the many different levels of "Evil". Using real life influences and portraying the phycology of killers as it actually is instead of using "Generic Evil Vidya guys" cemented The Five in my mind forever as the absolute worse humanity could achieve. Needless to say, this game left an impression.

At the time I was looking for a really scary and bloody game so I pick it up at Blockbuster for the weekend. Everything about the game stuck with me and I mean everything, I kind of knew about the Five being based on real life serial killer because I have a cousin who knew a lot about serial killers. one of the best games of the 90s, and one of my absolute favorites. despite receiving great praise at the time of its release I still feel like it deserves more recognition; in many ways I’d say it’s fairly obscure. I watched my brother play it back when it came out and it scared the everliving hell out of me, still to this day one of the darkest and most sinister vibes I’ve ever gotten from a video game. it has a singularly macabre, grotesquely haunting aesthetic. my brother and I were never able to crack it back then, it was simply to hard and too confusing for us kids. finally played through it (thanks to guides of course) thanks to steam just last year. it’s a masterpiece.

I fully agree. I watched my dad play and was hooked at a pretty young age. I ended up beating the game myself before he could. To this day it is the most horrific and disturbing horror game I've played, to say nothing of the sub par sequel. The ONLY gripe i have with Shadow Man is that the ending is very anticlimactic. I'm super stoked to play the Remaster, which includes all sorts of cut content

Thanks for the info! Hell yeah, I played this game around 2001, when my brother got it for PC and I heard him play and I was at my computer and it wasn't until I heard the zombies crying in pain that got all my attention and I wanted to play it right away and it became and still is my most favorite game. When I first saw the Asylum as soon as you entered the Marrow Gates, I was horrified by its giant presence and the threatening look and color and the smoke coming out on top. I couldn't wait to get in and they teased it from various locations. When I finally went in, it was crazy and the moment I reached the end of a wooden duct and already I could hear that sound of their hooks hitting the meat but I couldn't understand what it was until I saw it through the bars in the window. Then I saw the brick walls smeared with blood and the pigmen walking in and out and hitting meat pile mindlessly. The walls suddenly reminded me of one of my nightmares and it gave me cold fucking shivers. It was just nuts playing all Asylum and other Deadside levels and then reading up on it, even walkthroughs. Then I ended up getting the comics and read them all. Such a memorable and captivating story that kept me immersed in the game

@DethronerX

@@Slechy_Lesh I loved reading them. I have all the V1 comics (with Maxim and Jack as Shadow Men and some from V2 and 3 (with Mike) and some various issues from XO Mannowar where Shadow Man appeared. The reboot a few years ago, great in art and story on its own, changed the way Shadow Man are in the original timeline, where Nettie chooses them, changed to the new idea where its a Bloodline, which takes away how important and connected Nettie was to them. In V2, the first 4 issues by Garth Ennis and Ashley wood were the basis for the game and later, some new issues came based on the game, which is cool. As the writers and artists changed, it changes the feeling and I found that annoying. But I definitely recommend V1 and Garth Ennis and Ashley Wood comics. They were darker and more mature, kind of like Vertigo Miniseries comics are. The rest is up to you if you like them.

Batrachian was also inspired a lot by Hannibal Lecter from The Silence Of The Lambs, Victor main weapon is a tonfa just like the one used by Hannibal to escape from jail, he has his iconic prison suit and aesthetically he is a slightly younger version of Lecter. Furthermore they are both graduated in forensic psychiatry. As for Marco I think he is inspired from Zodiac for targeting lonely couples and for his main weapon being a handgun. Also they both mainly operated in California.

I think the Shadow Man killers are also based on famous killers from films as well. Batracian was based on Hannibal Lecter. His general appearance, doctor background, and accent is very close to Lecter. Milton Pike is based on Col. Kurtz from Apocalypse Now due to his military background and his militia membership. Avery Marx is based on Norman Bates from Psycho because of his matricidal tendencies and his dishevelled house. Marco Cruz is based on Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs due to his general appearance and his magnum handgun. His night-vision goggles are also in the game, but given to Avery Marx instead. Jack the Ripper was notorious enough that he wasn't based on any fictitious characters, but was exaggerated for the game. It's quite possible that the game developers used both real and fictitious killers as inspiration for the five. Love the video by the way.
@Slechy_Lesh
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, Batrachian was based on Lecter, but you're stretching a bit with the others. Norman Bates and Avery Marx are very different. Marx and Bates both killed their mothers, but in markedly different ways. Marx seemed to purely hate his mother and was deliberately sadistic, whereas Bates is more complicated - which makes him more similar to Ed Gein. Marx hunted his mother, etc, whereas Bates used poison and was apparently jealous of her relationship with a man. Matricide being used as a basis or suggestion of a basis for their psychologically unhealthy character is similar though.
@slawek382

Avery Marx is much more similar to Buffalo Bill from Silence of the lambs. His location is dark like at the end of the movie and it's also full of flying beings (canaries, instead of Buffalo Bill's moths). Marx, like Buffalo Bill, has a night vision googles too.

I remember reading out there that the whole Shadow Man spiritual theme isn't indicative to Voodoo culture. Apparently in old Norse culture, they had their own versions of shadow men that would guard and protect the world of the living from the dead, following the same theme of the game. It would be cool to see a game in the future if this franchise ever becomes revisited by a publisher, to go with a viking themed character that has the same mark on his chest like Michael LeRoi had in the game.

I think Milton Pike may have been based on the Backpacker Murders given he targeted hitchhikers, he also kind of looks like the guy convicted (possibly falsely) of it, probably a little bit of Miranda tapes inspiration on the video nasty part. Marco Cruz also gives me Golden State Killer/ Zodiac vibes given he targeted couples, especially since he broke into their homes which GSK also did.

Milton Pike may have been also based on Robert Hansen, a serial killer who also hunted women in the Alaskan wilderness. Like Pike, he was a military veteran, serving briefly in the United States Army Reserve.

I still have my N64 cartridge of Shadow Man (that to this day I still have no idea how it came into my possession, likely one of my brothers) and I remember being too afraid to face the first duppie, the humanoid ones that scream and growl at you in Deadside. To this day I still get uneasy when I see one, my first thought it just to blast them with the Shadowgun until they explode. Also, most people didn't know about that little map of Deadside that came with the game, I still have the original that came with my copy of the N64 game, I got a second one after ordering a copy of the Prima Strategy Guide two years ago.

I've waited for this game for almost a year and when I finally got it in 1999 i've spent every evening playing it for over a week. The art, storyline, architecture, atmosphere was on another level - no other game was so good, although sometimes it was a bit annoying and repetitive in combat.

"I am the Lizard King" is a Doors lyric. "This is the End" is said by Pike and the melody of the song of the same name plays after his death. It is also used in its pure form in *Apocalypse Now*, a film about Vietnam and the horror of war.

Absolutely love this game but I wouldn’t go for the N64 version, Dreamcast version all the way. But yes, certainly an unusual game to appear on a Nintendo system. I never got around to playing the sequel on PS2, said to be good but not up to the quality of the first game. Gotta play it someday. I certainly believe this is a franchise that should make a return but it would need the unique atmosphere of the original game to even be worth the effort. Just imagine how amazing a modern day remake could be.
