Some of the people in chat were talking shit on Chris Tolkien, none of them seemed inclined to actually look up what they were talking about. The guy hates the movies because he doesn't think that they are true to his father's vision, that they're basically just dumbed down commercialism... not because he's a "dudebro who hates nerd shit" or because he "hates anything that's not his". The guy practically dedicated his life to preserving his father's legacy...

I'm glad someone else saw this. It's bad enough when Frash and Becky misunderstand what is being said (I almost had an aneurysm when they thought people were saying Christopher had written the game or that it is somehow canon ) let alone bad information from the chat. [Btw, only work published during Tolkien's lifetime i.e. The Hobbit and LOTR is canon. Even the published Silmarillion isn't canon as Tolkien hadn't fully fleshed out the lore to his liking and was still changing ideas up to his death. It represents the most complete and coherent version that Christopher could compile at the time] Someone in the chat also thought Christopher was writing "new lore." That is the last thing he would do. Everything he has published has been as an editor of his father's unpublished and unfinished work. I am a Tolkien fan (and not just of the Middle-earth work) and also love the movies for the most part, but people should at least give criticism based on facts. Christopher Tolkien has done much more for Tolkien fans of every kind than the majority of people realize. He deserves the utmost respect, even when he misunderstands the motives and impact of people like Peter Jackson regarding his father's legacy. Many people have come to Tolkien's work, both fiction and academic, because of the films and the games than would have otherwise. It is sad that I knew before I even started to watch that Frash would somehow come to a horribly wrong conclusion about how this relates to Tolkien's work. It seems inevitable, especially with properties based on other work. It would be nice if they had one of the mods who knew what they were talking about be able to give them information directly rather than relying on interpreting the fragmented chat.

Except his father (you know, the guy who spent his whole life creating this world) had no problem with others using other mediums (movies and such) to tell the stories (which is why he signed off on the rights for movies to be made way back in the day). JRR Tolkien just never believed it could be done. Christopher seems to have forgotten this and has tried everything in his power to prevent the films and such to be made. But the only thing he really has any say over is the Silmarillion, and the Middle-earth stories that he himself wrote.

As someone who isn't a lore-nerd (nor do I honestly like LOTR) I have had a a lot of fun with this game so far. I'm not getting too much of the Assassin's Creed comparison that people are making. This is Batman.

Funny how Troy Baker plays the main character and his wife was voiced by Laura Bailey. They were also Vincent and Catherine from ...Catherine and Serah and Snow from Final fantasy XIII + Male Voice 1 and Female Voice 1 for the player characters in saint's row, I guess they make a good pair. Which is good since they are both great actors.

I knew Laura played rise, but never knew that troy played Kanji in persona 4 xD. Not a couple per say, but had tons of interaction. Seems like they voice a ton of games together.

I'm liking this so far! The opening cut scenes were well executed. Clichés are used often since when they are well executed can be really enjoyable. The way the game taught the sneak mechanic was cute too.

Actually frasher, there are many dragons of middle earth. Most of them are to the north. The wood elf king even mentions it in desolation of smaug. There are cold drakes, fire drakes, and wyrms.

To answer the question about rights and who owns what. Christopher Tolkien owns the right to all Middle Earth material. My guess is the games have the same deal the movies have, you can mention anything that is written anywhere in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and in the Hobbit, but you're not allowed to mention stuff from other material, if it hasn't been reference in Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit.
@joluoto
10 жыл бұрын
And I'll of course have to fill in that Christopher Tolkien does not have any influence over movier or games, and doesn't like any of that. He actually hated the movies. That's why he is so pricky with not allowing any other material than the Ring trilogy and the Hobbit be used.
@joluoto

Jonathan Luoto Also: the Tokien estate actually sued Middle-earth Enterprises, Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema for copyright infringement because they had give licenses for Middle Earth based video games, which according to the Tolkien Estate isn't covered by the license these companies were granted.
@joluoto

***** Which will no doubt cause alot of trouble with the Tolkien Estate. The again the devs can always say Middle-earth Enterprises never told them they couldn't use that material and shift the blame to a Company the Tolkien Estate already dislikes greatly.

***** Well, Frash/Becky/WhoeverthehellcommentshereasFFSTV, the movies are kinda a pain and exaggerate certain aspects. Take the Hobbit Trilogy for example. I have to wait for each movie, then I can watch them in succession. However, I can just pick up the book and start reading, and feel immesely overwhelmed with the awesomeness that is The Hobbit.

Sauron is basically an allegory for the devil, and Gandalf and the other wizards are basically Holy Spirits or like angels or whatever, basically, Tolkien was a devout Catholic so it was all God this, devil that, who cares, let's just enjoy the fantasy.
