Shadow Dark is all sizzle and no steak, in my mind; good that Arcane Library got a hit, but it is like a remake of "Who Framed Roger Rabit" sweeping the Oscar's.

@@rynowatcher Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a great movie, tho!

@@lordmatteus the original is good. A remake is less creative, hence my comparison to shadow dark. There is nothing new, and it has no focus on an ip or supporting matterial to prop it up. It is a "flash in the pan."

@@rynowatcher I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you there. People are starting to support it with third party material. I personally playtested The Shucked Oyster by Black Lodge Games. More like this is going to come out for SD. My prediction: it will be like Mork Borg but better and bigger.

@@lordmatteus you are welcome to disagree. This is only my opinion, but I saw it happen before with games like Numinera, Fantasy AGE, and Kobolds Ate My Baby. They got their fans still, but it is usually a game most people play once just to say they tried it. The osr is kind of crowded, and the compatable games have over 50 years of matterial that needs no conversion, so I doubt Shadow Dark is something we are going to be talking about in two years. tricky bit here is that rpg's do not ever die, per se. I saw an actual play of the Dallas RPG a few weeks ago someone did for a lark to say they did it. Does that mean the Dallas rpg play community is alive and well or that someone did it once for giggles? Mork borg is also a very "flash in the pan" game and one I would say is largely a game people own but do not really play. It is surviving based on constantly remaking itself though others genres: pirate borg, death in space, cy_borg... there is a third party market there, but it is not terribly commercially successful and kind of niche. A lot of the third party market for the borg games are really mechanically dissimilar to the original as the core game does not have a lot of room for a lot of growth of the product line. Just like there are still PBTA games, but I would not call Apocolypse World to be a surviving game. They are like Paranoia: everyone has played it once, but very few actually do a campaign and the lack of shared experiances make it hard to build a community.

@@rynowatcher I'm not a fan of Mork Borg but it seems to stick around. 🤷♂️ I stand by my prediction. The content some are making for it will keep SD around for a long time.
