Thank you ever so much sir. I am studying English Literature at Sapienza university, in Rome , so I can undoubtedly claim that it was a big help.

What this fellow is missing is that Shakespeare's poem is an exercise in Ekphrasis. It's a Greek word for a detailed verbal picture of a physical work of art. In this case a specific painting by Titian, in which Adonis is wearing a hat (there are five specifics mentions of the hat in the poem). The painting described had never left Italy by 1593, so Shakespeare had to have seen it in Titian's workshop in Venice. It's just one more piece of evidence that Shakespeare had been to Italy.

Going through 45 editions in a brief span of years, this poem was a massive best-seller. But all it was, according to you, was a philosophical look at the ins and outs of who gets to give permission in romance? That’s it? No scandal? No secret meanings? No subtext for audiences to pour over and delight in besides the steamy love scenes? Does that really satisfy your thirst to understand this work as it must have been seen at the time? Why was this poem so astonishingly popular? Was it connected by allegory to any current events? To sell so well, there must be something at work here which you are not identifying.

Sure. You’re interested in a historical reading and I’m giving more of a text-based reading. I’m sure a historical reading is also interesting, but I personally don’t get as engaged in the scandals and speculations for some reason. I hope you find some great historical discussions of this poem!

@@Nancenotes Thank you, but just to be clear- you find the surface retelling of Ovid and it’s peculiar deviations from the source to be of satisfying interest? That strikes me as reading Swift’s “Modest Proposal” as if it were a lesson in practical economics.

Ha, ha! That’s a bit extreme! To be fair, Swift readily explains the situation and its alternative solutions within his text, so a textual examination would provide plenty of context for understanding without further historical study, nor does a lack of historical study lose the value of his work as an excellent example of Juvenalian satire. I admit your method of literary study is good; it’s just not mine. I’ll also admit that this video is not meant to be a comprehensive look at the poem, merely a chance to pique interest and get a general idea of what it’s about.

This poem is skillfully written, however, the poem is foolish. And yet it is probably the best work of Shakespeare. A mythical "goddess of love and beauty" is unable to woo a man from preferring swine to herself no matter how much she tries. This is a silly idea. Having a great skill with words does not mean one produces a truly great work. This comment will probably incur the wrath of Shakespeare worshippers who overrate him and are caught up in the hype.

The thing is love or great art doesn't always have to be predictable.. besides, it's not the idea of a hapless goddess which matters, what is really important is the poetry of her desperation
