I already said this before but for me it's in this order Manga>2001 anime>2021 Anime The manga is so much better the anime was really moving at light speed the studio was clearly rushed. Also the anime has nice colors but the manga panels are fantastic and better fights. I love the art of the manga. 2001anime is still my favorite it is really what shaman king feels like to me. I felt the same reading the manga. i alwayd wanted to see the manga be animated in a similair fashion but instead it got rushed and things got Cut short and animation is worse. All it did was make me mad because being obsessed with the manga i know when something is skipped/cut out immediately. I was complaining everyday nearly until this anime got announced just to be so majorly dissapointed i can barely watch episodes now just skim through them didn't even watch the last ones.

While the show is accurate to the source material the fact the show does not really adapt to the format of animation like....at all so that coupled with the fact they don't adjust the script for minor fixes. I can't see anyone who didn't read the manga or saw the old anime coming out saying they're a fan of the series thanks to this

Shaman king manga itself was a very strange work, it felt like the author really didn't want to make a battle shonen but instead a supernatural/comedy slice of life. (funny how Hitman Reborn is similar in its concept and change) The 2021 anime is faithful to the manga down to its indecisiveness and rushed last arc. Overall, I like the 2001 anime more since it's a very enjoyable battle shonen through and through.

My probably biggest issue with this show feels like they didn’t want to make it. Your problem with Ohachiyo is completely valid, but also had like, three super long chapters dedicated to the manga. The final arc, which Hiroyuki was forced to wrap up much faster than he wanted to, could have been more fleshed out. It really frustrates me because Takei poured his heart and soul into this series and he was screwed, TWICE. There’s a great video on his passion, and I’ll like it here for anyone is interested. While I may not always have agreed on your perspective, thanks for the reviews, it’s been fun. Video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/26ZsxZ-snHd6kmk

1. Thing to correct faust dying is not a way to revive people with less expending mana. as they don't have the revival technique even if they use his spirit. All Yoh was able to do was use his hyou gattai to merge with faust so he can use his skill to nurse people but they can't revive anymore. Besides that I got nothing else to say. The issue with horohoro backstory is that we see more of it in the shaman king zero chapter. 3 which i think should have been in the anime mixed with the backstory parts of the manga. Along with hao missing his mappa douji backstory chapter that later got added in to the volumes. As for yoh not liking humans may sound out of character but i think makes sense as it is pretty much established that manta was his only friend. And yoh established that bond at that time where manta could see ghosts as that would make him one of the few friends he can interact that probably wouldn't think he is crazy or a freak.. Which i think that is kinda where his believe that people that see spirits can't be all bad kinda stems from it those people that are willing to interact with yoh. With manta being a rare situation.

Alright. Gotta be honest. Some of the complains might be subjective. I 100% agree that the anime rushes things and that's why it has less impact in emotional moments. 1. The biggest one I noticed is "Yoh saying he doesn't like humans" That's actually very easily backed up. In episode one, he says to Manta that he is his first friend. Ever wondered why did Yoh avoid humans despite being very friendly and open? I mean the conclusion is easy, but there's is even a Zero chapter in which we clearly see Yoh get bullied in school when he was younger and disliking human's distrust in spirituality and shamans. 2. Yeah, they said "final training", but if it's an arc in which noone trains and noone gets a new ability, then that isn't a training arc. And Hao was playful with unleashing his wrath on the very thing he hates from the bottom of his heart, that's why he doesn't hesitate and why Ren finds it admirable, he has a clear goal in mind and doesn't strive away under no circumstances, while Ren himself couldn't pass that in his head one episode ago. 3. The Horohoro backstory is giving him something tangable, even tho it's rushed, it's pretty scarring for a kid to feel like that. Unfortunately, have to bring up Shaman King Zero again. Horohoro's Zero chapter is about how he felt after Damko died. It slowly unveils a very uncanny scene and goes dark quickly. 4. Silva is connected to Yoh less in this version for sure, but they are spiritually related, Silva is a descendant of Hao as well, so the last test is sort of a poetic wrapup I guess. 5. I'm just sad you didn't bring up how cool the story of the alien was, "to explore the human heart" and all that. 6. Reiheit plays a main character in a sequel manga, just wanted to say, it's not your fault for not getting attached to him from a single appearance. It's the story presentation. 7. The finale actually feels a lot more sad in the manga, here they play it upbeat with soul salvation in the background. The manga felt very quiet and empty as the squad thinks back to how they're incapable of changing anything even after so long. Things that were needed in the adaptation to make all the characters miles better: Shaman King Zero and Mappa Douji Sequels to look forward to: Story about Reiheit, the x laws after all this Story about Jun and Pyron dealing with some war between families Story about a new cast of characters, Hana, Alumi (Silvas daughter) and a few others with a new goal in mind, while keeping the old cast almost completly out of the picture, that helps to focus on the new cast and not constantly think about the old.

For numbers 1, 3, and 7 I just want to clarify that I'm not criticizing the manga, I am criticizing the new anime. That line where Yoh says that he is not fond of humans is probably better supported by the manga, but it was not in the new adaptation. Also, when Yoh says that manta is his first friend, that doesn't fully justify Yoh saying what he did at the end. Even if it does make logical sense from a couple of scenes that hint towards that, that was never a major aspect of his character. For Yoh and Silva, I understand that they have a connection because they are both descendents of Hao, but from a dramatic standpoint, which is most important for something to be emotionally effective, they have next to no meaningful or emotional interactions at all. That's why I did not like the emotional undertones of that fight. The alien story didn't seem interesting to me as it came way too late into the story to be properly fleshed out. I just remembered thinking that it was overall a pointless inclusion in the story. Also for the training arc thing, they shouldn't have called it training and they definitely shouldn't have emphasized the main characters were going to be training if it wouldn't actually involve that.

@@etheri0n959 alright I do agree that reading the manga and these zero additional chapters makes the experience a lot better than the anime and it was unfortunate they weren't included. As for Yoh vs Silva, yeah, there was not a lot of emotional impact even tho they played it as if there was, which I do have to say were poorly handled anyways. I think expanding the story would've benefited it all, not shortening and rushing it. As for the alien story, idk, it's one of my favorite things about the story. A being that came to earth even tho it's advanced, and why did it come? Why did it interact with humans? Cause of curiosity and exploration, when a person doesn't have those, they can never grow. And that's why humans want to explore the human heart, the very thing that drives us toward other people and goals in life. Idk, that feels so amazing to me as a backstory for the entire idea of the shaman tournament. Exploring the heart to grow and ascend.

Yeah, I understand why the alien story would have that affect on the audience. I just personally wished it was expanded on more. When it came up in the anime, I just couldn't get over how suddenly the story was told and how quickly it was dropped and never spoken of again.

I honestly think the 2021 version was just a big disappointment because it was rushed and sloppy, especially the final arc. I binge-watched the last few episodes and it was pretty bad. Well, the final episode was okay but they could've just separated it into 2 episodes. I think they only did well was Osorezan Revoir Arc. After that, they just rushed it for no reason. Yes, I know there's a budget issue but they could've found a way to make the pace better and the fighting scene. But it was just a huge letdown so I would prefer the manga more. Compared to the 2001 anime, it was memorable and nostalgic that most of us watched when we were younger because there was a lot of great thing about this version is that we can get to know the minor characters more and make us care about them. Also, there were a lot of comedic moments for each character I would say. So I think it will always be the best of our childhood.

So I really just prefer the 2001 ending to the manga and 2021 show because I just don't find Hao sympathetic. No matter how much sad backstory the manga gave him I couldn't accept it because of how grossly disproportion all of his crimes are compared to what happened to him and the amount of time Hao existed. Hao really got the treatment and ending that made the most sense to me in to 2001 show.

I’ve seen some people argue that in the 2001 version Yoh killing Hao creates a thematic narrative dissonance as even if Hao is being emblematic of the themes of hatred, Yoh’s actions contrast the idea of forgiveness and finding the good in others, by not extending this principle to how he deals with Hao.
@etheri0n959
2 жыл бұрын
I fully understand that. I even thought that too when I first watched the ending. But since then, I reevaluated Hao's role in the story and decided that it would ultimately do more good to kill him due to the fact that he really didn't seem like he would just stop being evil and that he was generally more of a contributer to the cycle of hatred.

@0n959 I fundamentally disagree. Even without taking into account the original manga, Hao in the 2001 version was also not 100% bad. Firstly, his past, where he helped people, but received only evil from them in return, and secondly, how well he treats Opacho. Yes, in the end he scared her and she left, but it was in the heat of battle, he could not control his anger, and besides, judging by his face, he regretted what he had done. It was clear that there was hope to at least try to convince Hao to return to the good side, where he, in fact, was 1000 years ago. But, the writers of the old anime clearly did not care about Hao's deeper development, but simply wanted to end the anime in the most banal way possible, ignoring the fact that killing Hao not only contradicts Yoh's character, but is also illogical, based on the fact that after 500 years he will be reborn again, and will become EVEN STRONGER! His furyoku will probably be three million.
@etheri0n959

Here's the thing though. Even with a sympathetic past, Hao has still committed many many atrocities and his plan to wipe out all normal humans is a genocide that he was hell bent on committing to. One of the themes of the original shaman king anime is that justice and kindness are never stand alone. That you need to use both when it comes time to judge someone. When it comes to Yoh's personality, you can see his mindset subtly change over the course of the last stretch of the show. During Hao's fight with the x laws in the gate of Babylon arc, he looks at him and says, "you guys are really messed up." That might not be the exact line, but it's something of that nature. His reaction to Hao in this scene is something completely different from how he reacted to other characters in the show. After the gate of Babylon arc, he straight up says to Anna that he doesn't want Hao to kill anymore people. This shows that he's at least considering an alternate path from pacifism and that in order to stop Hao and ultimately do more good, he'll need to make an exception to his rule and kill him, even if he would like to be kind and show mercy. Even for a character like Yoh who had the mentality of forgiveness at the beginning, there is an exception to everything. By the end of the original show, Hao is irredeemable and the only option is to kill him. And Yoh killing Hao will make it so he can't revive. When the show delved into Yoh's relationship with Hao, Yoh's grandfather said that since he's a part of Hao, he might have the power to stop him, which is enough to say that Hao will remain dead.
@user-bc8mm3gj8s

@@etheri0n959 You have now simply put forward an assumption that has not been confirmed by anything. Another friend of mine said that Hao might not be reborn again, because his spirit was captured by the Great Spirit and imprisoned inside himself. However, both of these are just assumptions. In the old anime, not the Japanese version, not the dub, there is not a word about Yoh killing Hao once and for all. He simply struck him with a blow, which meant cutting him in half - that is, the usual deprivation of his physical body. Moreover, in the old anime there is not even clear confirmation that Hao died even temporarily, before being revived. Manta in the Japanese version says near the credits that "He doesn't know where Hao went!" That is, the open ending suggested a hypothetical continuation in which Hao could survive, simply by being injured or something like that. As for, Yoh, in order to add at least a little specificity to the change in his personality, which contradicts everything that he believed in the past, he could at least once say in one word that he is ready to step over himself and kill him, but no. His words after the Gate of Babylon that he does not want Hao to kill more people can be interpreted in any way. Just victory and neutralization, but not murder. Hell, the writers should have just given Yoh the opportunity to somehow strip Hao of his shamanic powers and turn him into a simple human, which he hates so much. This would not contradict Yoh's character, and would certainly deprive Hao of the opportunity to reincarnate..... I can feel the echo of Avatar Aang 🤣

Honestly, the manga's just makes me think the creator likes Hao too much. The original anime treating Hao as a monster isn't undeserved given he goes on and on about how awful humans are while being guilty of everything he accuses them of. Rather than the ending emphasizing that he is the real monster, Hao gets an unearned redemption because it's the only way to defeat him and he doesn't admit any of the things he did were wrong, in fact he still states he hates humans and comes to a decision not to kill them off screen. Plus, the plot of Flowers is about fighting so he can keep his position as Shaman King.

Most of your critiques were the same as mine. Definitely one of the weakest final arcs. The manga just barely pulled it off but other than the last three episodes it was all just bland in the anime. I really enjoyed the show, although I don't feel like I could confidently recommend it to anyone else. Some parts I liked for what was intended, but I think a large portion of my enjoyment was for the wrong reasons, for how stupid and goofy it was compared to the (slightly) more held together source material. Whether or not the creators intentions matter is a whole other can of worms but yeah, in an objective standpoint it is a bad thing. From when they got on the Patch Jet till the Golem arc I was completely hooked though. I'll probably be going back to specific episodes in that portion but everything else is done better in the manga. It can't stand by itself and is a lot more hit and miss than the 2001 adaptation.
