ATTENTION! I'm a roofer of 15 years, qualified with RCABC, and Red Seal Damper. "Material transfer" will happen if you pull your shingles apart, so will tearing. This will happen even if they're brand new, this is what they're meant to do. Shingles have a tar line on them that seals them down, this seal is meant to last their lifetime. When we determine a roof is passed its lifetime, is degradation of this seal, UV damage noticeable by loss of granulation, and overall quality of the work. Nails will pull through for many reasons. Shingles get thin over time, and on a hot day those nails will pull through with no effort, other reasons is poor instalation, blown through nails, or if you walk on Shingles when they are hot, you will pull the Shingle from the nails. Insurance companies haven't a clue what they're talking about.

He's trying to get the insurer to by a new roof by showing it can't be repaired due to nail pull through and material transfer. Of course the shingle isn't supposed to be strong enough to lift the nail, and transfer could be reduced by heating the seam first or corrected by scraping. If you had to pay for the whole roof yourself you'd patch it, though a roofer like this might try and convince you it wouldn't work.

To me it looks like roofing and insurance paid repairs is heading in the wrong direction, I have personally never done a shingle roof before last year, but I have done metal roof and clay shingle roof in Europe for 5 years, so last year I needed a new asphalt shingle roof and did it my self, took me longer than I expected, but it went thru 2 storms with heavy wind and rain and is still there with no leaks. I saved a fortune and I think I'll save the money I would be paying insurance and instead fix it my self when needed. At least I don't mind learning or working, but I do mind paying and not getting the work done as it should be done.

Most of all that depends on what climate you're in what time of year it is and what the temperature is outside and then the age of the shingles But you have to bring them up to get the nails out and put new Nails back just the fact of the way sjingle are made Could use a little bit of heat to soften up the shingle though after all it is made of tar or asphalt

Watching him thrashing about, looking for nails (without a clue which one need removal), and being way less than cautious, makes me want to vomit. Yet, no mention about the shingle installation? This roof is worn out and in need of full replacement..... I remember when we discovered our roof was worn out and leaking. We were having a difficult financial period and roof shingles were really high. But I had to do something. So I purchased rolls of synthetic roof felt and rolled it out while overlapping. I placed multiple weights to hold it down. It stopped the leaks for 8 months until we were able to get a new roof. The contractor said he understood my situation. He also said I probably prevented 20k in additional damage with rotting deck, ruined insulation, mold, and drywall damage. He also said you wouldn't believe the amount of people who shrug their shoulders at deck rot and bad insulation. They say just roof over rotting deck to which he said he turns down the job as that is stupidity on steroids.

Nah because the tar didn't unbond.. it stayed bonded and ripped material off the other shingle. I'm not a roofer so not sure if this is the right stuff to use.. but I would reseal it with the tar that comes in a tube and use the caulk gun.

This could be a simple repair. Since it has become fashionable for these fly by night "contractors" that blitz a storm damaged area and tell everyone they need their entire roof replaced, but wait the driveway needs to be sealed. Oh you need new siding and hell foundation needs to be leveled. Do not under any circumstance accept an estimate or allow any "roofer" (a group of guys working under their buddy's general contractor license) to get near your roof. Call a local roofer that you know will be there tomorrow. These guys are scam artists and don't know what they are doing.

All you have to do is buy one bundle of shingles, if you don't still have a spare few still laying around from when the roof was done in the first place. Stupid things like this is what drives up insurance prices, this goof is trying to make money from nothing.

This guy is ridiculous. Messed up several shingles just to repair one suposedly damaged flap on a shingle. I don't think guy knew what he was doing.
