Being someone who felt very neutral about Shane in 2015, I would have read her tweets thinking, "what's her problem?" But knowing what we know now in 2020 along with details of what happened in The Chair, her anger feels completely understandable and heartbreaking. Oh man, it made my heart sink how they only complimented Anna’s movie behind her back after she obviously, by every measurement, made a better film. I like Zach Quinto and generally I think he made good choices in this show and called Shane out where he could, but it’s frustrating seeing him not be as vocal to Anna as he was to Shane. People have hit the nail on the head saying how that’s pretty blatant misogynistic behavior. You could chalk it up a bit to Shane’s aggressive/confrontational personality and the fact that he clearly wouldn’t listen to any criticism, but it’s still super unfair to Anna.

I'm in showbiz and let me tell you, when they critiqued Shane, they didn't take him seriously. To them, and any film person can tell you this, his film was a joke. not something to really take serious which is why they didn't give him any pointers. For Annas, her approach was more serious and professional. When we give and receive critiques like that right away, that's when we know why have the ball going. This is not to say that she didn't deserve good critiques (we get those too) because she did, but we tend to focus on what doesn't work first. It's just to keep it going since we don't have much time to really ponder on an idea and reshoot things (you'd basically have to do the whole process again even for small reshoots). Over all, Shane's film is one that you would have playing from a pirate site and playing the background just for noise. Anna's you can pay attention to and understand what she tried to say with it. Two different films, and yet one is just not good. Also, i'm not saying this as "the crew on Shane's didn't put work into it" because that's a lie. Regardless, it's a film and it's tough to make one. I just hope that whoever reads this gets my point that his wasn't really a top priority even for Shane himself. You can tell by his attitude and the hostile environment he created.
@BrieCheese
4 жыл бұрын
1. Shane was given pointers. He just didn't want to listen to any constructive feedback. 2. They don't have an opportunity to do reshoots. They had to shoot the entire movie in 20 days, and Anna was constantly criticized for wanting to make every single detail perfect and running overtime. We heard more about how she might go over budget than we heard about her GOOD ideas that made the film watchable. 3. We see Anna work twice as hard and get half as far as Shane. Shane won the competition, he received more compliments from the producers, with less criticism, got $250,000, and was able to continue to make more movies afterwards. Anna got half the praise, twice the criticisms, and left still struggling to make a living off of her art. 4. If this is the way that show biz happens to work, then it desperately needs to change. I saw a guy skate by because he's popular while a talented director was tossed aside because she was unknown.
@queli8348
4 жыл бұрын
@@BrieCheese She lost because he's a known youtuber. He has fans that are going to vote just to make him win without watching the films. That's why they threw away like 30% of the votes because they noticed that people guessed on the questions to only vote for him. I also mentioned how they have no budget or time to reshoot. Again, Shanes' whole production is and was a joke. They let him do what he wanted because 1. he was an asshole to crew and 2. they seemed to not really care much about the story since he didn't care about it in a serious manner. She was criticized more because, from my experience too, filmmakers who take their visions of a story seriously are taken seriously so people are harsh. Film over all is harsh. If you suck at a job or if the story sucks, they tell you how it is. This job is NOT for the kind heart (there are some people that are nice but overall dreams are always crushed). She was also criticized more because WOMEN in film tend to not really be taken serious and we tend to have to work a little harder for people to be like okay she knows what she wants" since this career is a bit more men dominated (tho times are changing). Comedy is hard to criticize so people tend to not say much because it's to a persons humor. they can say it sucked (which a shit ton of people did) but they're not going to go into detail about why it was funny (idk if you seen The Chair but some crew try to say "its racist with a purpose" after someone called out the script for it not even being funny.) Shane cannot handle pointer and criticism and that is clearly seen throughout the whole series. He was an asshole and thought he was the shit because he was popular on youtube. He is full of himself and I honestly believed that Anna should have won that. She deserved it way more than he did. It wasn't all "show biz" that made her lose. It was his position on already being popular than her and using it to win. If they were to have done this NOW, I can 100% say that he would have lost.

I recently watched a few podcasts where each of them had 3-4 guys, and most of them said that when they were in high school (for international people, between 15-18 years old) they had a lot of anxiety about their endowment because the only time they'd see other guys that were erect was in porn and as teenagers, it just left them thinking that that's how big they're supposed to be...and when the reality is that 6.02 inches is the average size in America, I can see how that would give you anxiety if you're 5 or 5.5 inches and seeing guys with 8+ inches in porn. It's kinda sad how western society has created such a negative stigma when it come to sex...one of the most natural things about humans. The disparity in how Anna and Shane were treated by the producers, how insanely more complimentary the writer was to Shane's script changes than Anna's, the way Shane was constantly thinking about the competition, how he looked on camera and might compare to Anna while she focused on the film itself, how awful Shane truly was to the people he worked with. And circling back around, just the way Shane was coddled and encouraged throughout the entire thing was upsetting to see. Thank you for making this video and for so intelligently calling out the misogyny of this series; but the good thing is that, completely accidentally, the show also showcased the bigger blatant misogyny of the film industry and why Hollywood movies can't muster one well written female character. With male writers like that, it's no wonder.

Zachary Quinto also played on Heroes and American Horror Story. I know those aren't movies, but they were/are both fairly popular and aren't obscure at all. Also, I know a lot of people who love comedies(myself included) who'd be extremely uncomfortable with a movie like Not Cool. And just looking on imdb, Zachary's been involved in comedies(two tv comedies he's been in are Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Big Mouth)).
@BrieCheese

Shane's whole rant on Zachary Quinto made no sense. He said something about how Quinto never going to make money and he's going to keep making movies that are boring as fuck, meanwhile Quinto's networth is $14 million. He's hardly an obscure, starving artist.
@heatherduke5410

@@BrieCheese Exactly. Quinto is fairly well known. Even if someone doesn't watch The Star Trek movies, they might've seen him in something like American Horror Story or Heroes. He also has a show called NOS4A2 and was recently cast in a show for Amazon, so he's still getting work. And I just realized he was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. A place Shane seems to have such disdain for.
@BrieCheese
4 жыл бұрын
@@heatherduke5410 Yes, that was mentioned in the docuseries. Shane's version of Tori originally kept referring to Pittsburgh as a shithole, and Quinto wanted him to change that. The whole point of filming in Pittsburgh was to build up the infrastructure there so that other movies could be shot in Pittsburgh. He also wasn't very present during the filming of Anna and Shane's movies because he got an acting job and had to leave to film for three months.

About the rough cut situation at the end: It reminds me of university where we had to present the main points of our term paper and I was scheduled alongside some other dude. And at the end, I got asked to put together a concept of "how I would improve Apple's Siri (technically)" on the spot while the other guy was asked whether he used Twitter often and liked using it and what he was using it for. No kidding. When I complained about that to students I was friends with, they wondered whether the reason that I got asked more complex questions was bc the professor expected me to be able to answer those as opposed to the other person. Which I wonder is what happened with Anna since they obviously thought she had much more talent than Shane and thus were harder on her bc they didn't take Shane seriously anyway. Still frustrating to be on the receiving end.

I explained this concept to my daughter who is a talented artist. Yet, is highly critiqued by her teacher in art class based in how "nit picky" she acts to her over other students. I asked her "is she this way to everyone?" No. "Do you suspect she she wants more out of you " Yes. I told her "Well, she acts this way because she knows you can do better and generally just expects more from you. Take this as a compliment that someone sees your potential ".
@BrieCheese

If the teacher nitpicks your daughter and gives her a lower grade than the people who did lower quality work, then I would imagine that her feelings of frustration are valid. I'm not saying that is what's happening with your daughter, but that is basically what happened with Anna. She produced a far better film, the producers asked her why she had Tori do the voice over and not Scott, but never asked Shane about how poorly his female characters were written, and Shane got to walk away with the money. It's valid to complain about getting little to no reward or recognition for all your hard work.

The "dick" scene was actually a good idea in my opinion. It wouldn't fit the competition because most of the people that are gonna come watch Shane's movies are very young, and they need to be able to watch both... But that was such a good way to normalize sex, condom, awkwardness... NORMALIZE SEX BEING AWKWARD. THAT'S OKAY.
@BrieCheese

Shane actually had full frontal male nudity in his movie. He had a lot of trouble finding a black man in Pittsburgh who was willing to show his penis, but they were able to find a body double in LA. 13:27 imagine being the guy Shane is talking about, or a member of his family and hearing that. I feel bad for everyone who had to work on that movie, they were probably scared to speak up, I would be if I heard him say stuff like that. I wonder what was left on the cutting room floor. They probably tried to make him as likable as possible as he wins the show and want viewers to be happy at the end; and this is the best they could do.

I think that Shane was likable for about 75% of the docuseries, but when he wasn't likable he said shit like that. He said similar things presumably about Franchesca Ramsey (but really about an unnamed SJW who kept calling him out) on one of his podcasts. I included a lot more clips of The Chair and I talked more about Anna's short film. kzitem.info/news/bejne/sItq3I6isHuedKw Unfortunately the video got a copyright claim and was demonetized hours after I uploaded it. You can't watch it on mobile, which sucks because that means that people who mainly watch KZitem on their phones won't be able to see it. But if you are able to see it, I would really appreciate if you watched it and commented on it. I also read the script that both Shane's movie and Anna's movie were based off of. Turns out that Anna doesn't get nearly enough credit for changing a mediocre script. kzitem.info/news/bejne/z56ErZNvs6KWo44 Also check out Anna's short film! I've linked it in the description of this video AND in the description of my Hollidaysburg video. It's a good example of what Anna's capable of when she's working with personal story that is based off of a script that she wrote.
