True, but you weren't there. The guy obviously had parts of him that were so amazing you loved him, but then there was this other part where he was a monster. That's confusing for a child.

The trouble with abusive people is they often live through abuse as children and never learn otherwise. Trauma begets trauma by breaking people and leaving them with poor impulse control, and often without the means (or too much shame) to admit they have a problem and seek help. My own dad messed me up a great deal, but he had his own shitty childhood to contend with, among other things, and he also raised my sister and I. I demonized him for a long time, and I'm still not "over it," but I can see the bigger picture now. I think Shania can, too.
