It's 2024 and I am actively looking for a CD Player/transport. Why? Because I have been buying CDs since I was a kid (I'm 35) and I like to own the music I like, especially if I can't find a digital copy to buy. I can rip a CD to FLAC for listening on the go and for archive purposes, and I get physical album art and most of the time a booklet with cool stuff like liner notes ( I do like to see who worked on what songs, used what instruments, produced and mixed the album, etc) and lyrics that are usually accurate. This whole rant of Z's is a joke because he's only considering his own bias and perspective. I don't know which CD touched you the wrong way when you were younger Zeos but this rant/video is pretty unwarranted.
@alphaniner3770

I love Zeos - but I bet it is quite a challenge for him to listen to an album from play till the last notes of the last track fade. That is why I like CDs - they slow down this frantic life to the nice pace we had before Internet came in.
@lisar3944
7 ай бұрын
@@alphaniner3770 right? That's not a criticism of Zeos it's just his style which is fine - it's just not everyone's bag. For me it's the same contrast when I want to watch a movie online - I spend an inordinate amount of time looking at what's there, often if I am not pleased within the first 15 minutes I'll switch to something else...but for whatever reason if I play a blueray I'm more committed to just.....WATCHING THE MOVIE. I never got into streaming music but with rips I spent more time playing this then that then the other thing....frankly? It's not the best (for me). Much prefer loading a disc and listening all the way through. I find it far more enjoyable and yes, relaxing, to just commit and enjoy the whole ride as it was intended. But that's kind of the point: we have all these options and none are better or worse than the other on a grand scale - it's about what each individual enjoys. Having new players coming out is fantastic as it means we will be able to continue to enjoy our cds for a while longer, and maybe even end up with better equipment for a reasonable price. There is zero downside here.

@@Isthare The Shanling CD80 and ET3 share little in common. Shanling reps that pop on to other forms have talked about both of them, but here are the key differences: (1) the ET3 is a transport only, so you need an external DAC; (2) the ET3 is a premium CD transport, that is meant to compete with Jay's Audio transports and even the PS Audio transports; (3) the ET3 has upscaling to DSD and has an i2s output; (4) the ET3 uses top loading, again a feature common in super high end CD transports; and (5) the ET3 has USB output and even a USB input. Those who have tested the ET3 note that it is probably one of the best transports on the market -- besting Schiit's Urd that sells for $1200. The CD80 in comparison: (1) slot loading; (2) has a cheaper laser and drive, not the premium stuff in the ET3; (3) has a built in DAC that cannot compete with say SMSL's D6-s that you could use with the ET3; (4) has only an optical output, so no USB input, no USB output, no coaxial output and no i2s output. The CD80 may be a good starter CD player, but there is a reason why the ET3 costs twice as much -- though it is almost half the cost of the Urd and is $2300 cheaper than a Jay's Audio transport.

@Zircemerald The differentiation with vinyl or cassette or any other analog format is that it actively changes the sound - for better or worse - similar to using a tube amp instead of a solid state amp. You're intentionally fucking with the sound to make it sound distorted, it has nothing to do with portability. Its equally stupid to walk around with a desktop tube amplifier or something. A CD is just a storage medium. It's no different than if you put the data on literally any other digital storage medium, just that it's more inefficient. And like honestly? Yeah, there's no reason for new production CD players to exist currently, there's like fourty years of vintage stuff that sounds equally as good as what's made now, and if the DAC chips used in it weren't good the vast majority of them had optical or coax outs. Manufacturing new audio CD players is just manufacturing E-Waste.

I like CDs. They sound better than 99.9999% of streaming music, they are cheaper and easier to rip than records, they don't get removed or lost when a label fights with it's artist or your hard drive crashes, CDs aren't replaced by worse sounding/super compressed "remasters" that almost always sound worse, and they are cheaper to put out than vinyl for new music. Some of my CDs just can't be found on any streaming service, some were on there an now they aren't do to copyrights or a label going out of business. Now, I don't argue for a portable CD solution. A dap or phone with you're ripped library is just too convenient to make an argument there. For home use though, newer CD players have more features, newer technology, and seem to be more compact than old players. Personally I use an old DVD player with a coax out for CD playback but I would like something more compact in the future. Also yes, there is a "ritual" to playing a CD. It's not the same as playing a record, but there is a ritual that puts me in a listening mood. I for one welcome our new CD player overlords. Send me the players and I'll film a review for you that you can put on the channel if you are in a crush for content.

Just got my hands on an EC Mini, and Zeos hit the nail on the head - it's not exactly portable. The lens is quite sensitive, and the interface could be more user-friendly. Despite my mixed feelings, I have to admit, the sound quality for my CDs on this little unit is outstanding, especially considering its price. I've found myself delving back into my old CD collection, even buying more CDs lately. While it's not the most convenient device, its sound signature truly impressed me. MQA CDs sound particularly phenomenal, surpassing the quality of any ordinary CD walkman. I tend to avoid carrying it around due to concerns about its delicate CD mechanism. Although I had to exchange the first unit due to issues, the audio experience was too good to give up on. While I'm enjoying the sound of the replacement, I've encountered the occasional skipping, likely caused by dirty CDs or minor movements, as Zeos mentioned. Hopefully, this second device holds up better. Overall, it's not for those seeking convenience, but for me, the pursuit of incredible sound outweighs practicality. Thanks for the candid review, Zeos - I completely see where you're coming from.

CDs never went away. A great CD transport (note -- not a CD player, with a DAC -- and even better if the transport upsamples to DSD, for example see the Shanling ET3) to a great DAC to a great amp is better than any streaming content. Then there are the other benefits of a CD: (1) it is physical media, that you own, with photos and session information that is fun; and (2) you can find CDs for remarkably cheap prices, and that can include everything from Blue Note and Verve releases to super strange, off-brand releases. To me, CDs are what everyone loves about vinyl, but without vinyl's quality control and various other issues.

I love physical media, but a standard DVD/Blue ray drive will work just as well. Ripping CDs and using the digital file is the best way to do it. I do like the look of the smsl player, although the switches on it need to be lubed.

A blu ray player spins 4 times faster than a regular cd player. It can only read a quarter of a rotation at a time. Putting those quarters back together causes a loss in quality. Side by side, it is noticeable.
@lisar3944

@@mynameisradman exactly, it will work, but the implementation is not great. I would like to see more reviews that actually dig into the implementations on these new players and ideally compare them to higher end (crazy expensive!!!) transports/players.

I thought these new CD players were dumb (a ten dollar thrift store DVD player makes a great CD transport). But now I'm hoping you get a bunch of portable CD players with MQA and giant blue LEDs for review. Complete Zeos meltdown rant!

It’s the best format, it’s a copy of the master with zero interference, servers, connection or data compression. Plus you own it. Kinda simple. I mean you could down load it but it’s tied to some account someone else manages. It’s true download or streaming is better in a practical, but if you love that artist might as well own a piece of their art and work.

If, as you say there is no joy with CDs - don't have anything to do with it. Simple solution, wouldn't you say. FYI, the format never disappeared, it was on hiatus for a while and is making a re-emergence of sorts once again. If for whatever reason, that is not your likiing or satisfaction or just plain pisses you off ..... well, life wasn't meant to please everyone - get over it. As per the vinyl enthusiasts, we CD users also OWN the music we listen to. I am both, a vinyl and CD collector and enjoy both formats - 1847 LPs, 3 turntables, 2153 CDs and 5 CD players / transports. For those of us open minded individuals who listen for sheer enjoyment and pleasure, regardless of the format, your huffing and puffing, raving and ranting is simply irrelevant. Have a nice day.

I still buy CDs I never stopped buying CDs. I'm not in the market for a CD player I already own several. That being said for all my portable needs I rip them all to Flac files. The closest I've ever come to streaming music is listening to KZitem or doing KZitem rips on things that aren't available.

I am one of these crazy people looking for a CD Player. I do not want or need a portable version. The desktop version that is also a DAC is great idea for me. It can be My DAC all the time and go to my 2 amps.

I hope zeos makes a video about the fiio portable cassette player when fiio releases the portable cassette player. I just wish cds have the same durability in terms of the scratch resistant coating found on 4k and blu ray discs. I'm a physical media junkie. I still buy 4k, blu ray, dvds, cds, cassette tapes and even mini discs. I don't have room for vinyl records otherwise I would add vinyl records to my physical media collection since my physical media are already stored in plastic bins since my bookshelf is already full of movies, cds and video games for my game consoles.

CDs are my primary source, lol. I have a TOTL Harman Kardon that can be used as a DAC. And a Chinese TUBE CDP that sounds quite lush! 2024? People are spinning vinyl, listening to R-T-R decks, cassettes, etc. All formats continue to be played. Same argument can be made for BOOKS. I have a library of several thousand books. IT IS A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE FROM E-BOOKS, no? So I can either walk into my library or sit at a desk in a closet sized room in front of an SD card with all my books on it, really. Sure, that's the same thing?

Why don't they make the black cd player capable of ripping your cd library? Even back it up to a device on your network or even an online service? I would argue that if it could do that without the need of a computer, its utility makes it worth having.

I grew up with cd's but I also have music that's not on streaming services and/ or its been remastered into modern compressed trash There's also a bit of a ritual to go to the effort of sitting down, loading a disc and hearing the whole album as originally intended by the engineer How long did it take to rip and load your music to SD card?

I actually like a larger physical format like cassette or cd vs a digital library. Music is a art fourm. I love my cassettes with the fold out J card. If we could get a solid state format like cd and cassette with cover art. it would be great.

great video man personally I still buy CDs even of new release music. but I have absolutely no need for a audiophile grade CD player. I buy the CDs and then rip them to my media server, I do this because I refuse to be confined by DRM.

What I’m annoyed with is companies making over $1k cd transports that don’t even have features we enjoyed in players from the 90s like track programming and random play. I do have a collection on CDs that I’m enjoying again because now that I’m working remotely (Thanks global pandemic) and built a desktop system and love listening to my old CDs while I work. Using a Topping MX5 balanced to 3.5 to a portable cd player and it sounds amazing! With Q Acoustic speakers and Sundaras and IEMs as well!

I set up a CD player for my system to play some CD's I had stored for a long time. It was nostalgic. It was nice. I recommend it to folks who have CD's around. I don't think I'll be buying *new CDs though.

I still have CDs I've bought in the 2000's. If I can't find the music *anywhere* I'll find a CD to rip from it. So it's either that or I bought higher quality lossless because CDs skip and any sort of scratch will almost ruin the CD. Who remembers using the DiskDr. on your Playstation CDs? Keep the CDs in your Radwood car. "I like to own my music" You can still buy music. The world didn't move from CDs to Spotify.

Sony DVPSR210P DVD Player. One of the best CD transports out there. The analog output is garbage as you would expect for the price. But the coaxial output gives such a beautiful signal to any DAC I own, they all sound excellent. Best transport out there for under $500. And it's only $35 regularly on Amazon and at Best Buy.

Yep - others have said, I'm here because I detest paying hard earned money for a few digital bytes sent over the interwebs. There are use cases for CDs. I have 1000s of CDs that i use as an archive for my radio show. I rip them and use the FLAC files from that process,. CDs are a physical backup of my collection.
