@@PassionforSound well in that price a new set of good iem will come like tin t4 or blon 03 which sounds much better than 50- 100$ iem. Why any would invest such money in dac unless he has very expensive headphone??
@PassionforSound

It's an interesting question. At some point the quality of the output will limit the maximum quality of your earphones. For example, the BLON A8 Prometheus is an earphone that sounds fine from an average source, but can sound noticeably better from a better source. Personally though, I'd look a little higher than the UA1. The new Ikko Zerda is nice as are the EarMen Eagle and NextDrive Spectra X

Hi, do you think you might test the hidizs s9 or ikko zerda? The hidizs s8 or tempotec sonata hd pro tested well but was bright. S9 is supposed to be more balanced sounding, more powerful, has balanced output. Be interesting to see against the earmen eagle. The ikko zerda might be nice as well, one reviewer preferred it over the dragonfly cobalt and it's only $100 usd, said sound was basically identical, but better build/much cheaper.

Not sure why that would be, Aether. The Android OS can do some strange things with audio outputs to devices like this so I can only assume that's what's happening. Some music apps bypass the Android processing to prevent these issues so perhaps that's what you're experiencing.

No problems. Regardless of the device, they'll improve the sound from any source (Spotify, local files, Tidal, etc.) The challenge is that iPhones need the adapter to connect external DACs and Android need apps that can bypass the Android OS sound processing (e.g. USB Audio Player Pro)

The thing that gets me with these little dongles or any portable is how much power do they consume from the phone, I use an ifi nano BL which has a built in battery and I am not sure how far along that technology has come but I cant get more than 2 hours on that using the same way I would if I had it connected to my PC, not sure if listening volume even plays a role on power consumption[fixed or variable cons]. I mean two hours isn't bad, but I can imagine with no built in battery this thing wont last. Plus, ifi claims it will run for 8 or 10 hours, cant recall, on a full charge. Which is fine, but the source is getting canned. YayFor10k! keep it up man 20k is right around the corner.
@PassionforSound
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike and thanks for the words of encouragement! 🙂 The dongles are very power efficient these days and can easily give you many hours of playback (depending on what else you're using your phone for). I haven't specifically tested the limits of playback time, but having used these types of devices a lot during my 1-hour commutes in the past, I can confirm that they might use 5-10% battery per hour at most from a phone like a Galaxy S10+. Higher volumes and more difficult headphones will of course increase the drain and I tend to use them with IEMs so take that into account too.
@mikegoddard7354
3 жыл бұрын
@@PassionforSound Yes, I am uncertain if it is an issue with the amp itself or what is going on precisely. I had someone suggest to turn the unit on and then connect it to my phone so my battery would not drain[nano BL] however the issue is still persistent. I am unsure if it is just a bad unit or why the internal battery is not taking on the full load of driving the headphones. The unit is not my own, and a friend of mine let me borrow it for desktop use when I did not have my own dac amp. Just got into quality headphones not too long ago. But that is a sight for sore eyes and regardless of IEM or not it is shooting out the same power. My travel headphones are 32 ohms. So cant really understand why it takes up 50% of my cellphone battery in an hour. I mentioned earlier, with the earman tr-amp, which you reviewed. I liked that amp because I would assume with possibly a 10000mah external battery I can power the unit and have it connected to my phone with the dual C plugs it posses. Which is ingenious. However as you maybe already aware the ifi unit is power by USB and fed a signal making that an impossible task I believe.
@PassionforSound
3 жыл бұрын
I can't remember the Nano setup - I had one for a while, but a long time ago. I thought powering it on before plugging in would engage it's battery instead of the phone, but maybe that's not the case or maybe it's faulty. Either way, the TR-AMP definitely works off its internal battery because the charging socket is separate from the signal socket. And then the dongles are very gentle on batteries these days.

I didn't have them both at the same time, but I think the UA1 is a bit smoother which I prefer, but overall comparable.

Heya Lachlan, got a question, I grabbed a Shanling UA1, for a new set of moondrop Aria's for my girlfriend, but when I plugged it in it worked for about 10 seconds on my HD6XX, then stopped. Is the usb c for charging the UA1 ? Thank you for your time and help buddy, it's greatly appreciated 🤟😈🎧🔥🎶

Hmmmm. That's strange! The UA1 takes power via the USB, but has no battery so it doesn't need charging. What were you using it with? Phone or computer?

@@PassionforSound got it sorted buddy, it only was enough to power the left speaker on the HD6XX but put the arias in and worked but kept hearing that clip sound, tried the earmen sparrow and clipping sound was gone.

Interesting. I didn't realise the UA1 would struggle to power the HD6XX because I don't own them.

@@PassionforSound I'll try it again and let you know buddy. My eagle works better, that's for sure at powering the HD6XX and the Arias.

The Eagle is great and definitely superior to UA1 🙂

Hi Sanjay, I'll see what I can arrange, but I can't afford to buy all the gear I'm asked to review so I have to hope for manufacturers and retailers to provide demo units. I'll see if Hiby are interested.
