Worked at Schlumberger for years and would watch these guys all the time! Great video! I actually found a chute one day and took it over there and man said we’ve been looking for that.

What happens to the parachute which flies away (The cut away one)**?Like do u get it back ?

Most times we are able to get them back. You can get a pretty good idea of where it lands. Occasionally they are lost forever in dense forest or something.

Does the cutaway automatically initiate the reserve deployment? Or does the jumper have to then grab a different pull ring to pop the reserve?
@nathanbond8748

Gary there is a thing called an RSL or reserve static line, if you have one then your main will automatically pull your reserve out when you cut it away. You also have a handle to deploy the reserve with too if the RSL fails.

I’m not a skydiver so excuse my ignorance but what causes a line over ? Is it due to a rush repack or does it occur during opening ? Also why fight it so long if it’s not controllable ? Should she have cut away earlier rather than trying to recover for so long ?

Line over malfunction is caused by a wrong packing technic and/or a rush packing. Basically you have to be sure that the lines from the tail are straight down and material is to the outside, finally in the rolling of the tail you have to do it just for put the pack job on the floor not to close the canopy, rolling the tail in excess can lead to a line over when the D lines come down over the nose in the packing process.

Sorry, just seeing these comments now. First and foremost, she did what needed to be done and saved her life. Having said that, this was a learning experience and she used it to improve her emergency procedures for future malfunctions. (she now has over 2,000 jumps and has had 4 cutaways)

Just saw these comments, better late than never. Haha. Her main landed in the swoop pond on the dz. The staff retrieved it, dried it out, and had her reserve packed all within 3 hours:)
