At 3:26 the line is " a la manoeuvre le Bosco te dresse a coup de cabillot " and not cabillaud. Cabillot and cabillaud have the same pronunciation and while the second one is a cod fish in English, the first one is translated pin I think. There are alot of them on a tall ship, you use them to block your lines ( sheets halyard whatever ). Even if they're not necessarily big, the wood is thick resistant to support the tension of the lines so it would hurt if use to beat someone

Formidable as always! A few details on the translation: "cabillot" (belaying pin), rather than "cabillaud" (cod); "donner la goutte" is "serve a (brandy) shot to drink" rather than "gout".
@SeanDagher
3 жыл бұрын
You're probably right about cabillot, but it's way funnier with the fish. I have a book from France that prints is as "cabillaud" but that doesn't mean it's correct. As for the "goutte," we're spending the whole song talking about what a jerk he is, so it doesn't really make sense to talk about him giving us brandy. Also, the sentence is split up over the whole verse: Il donne la goutte à ses matelots à grands coups de barre de guindeau ! I think the gout meaning, while not perfect, is the better choice.
@hisnard
3 жыл бұрын
@@SeanDagher Well, « donner la goutte » is an actual turn of phrase in the late 18th c. / mid 19th c. French Navy. It’s basically the bit of brandy that is given at the end of a hard day, to thank the sailor. In this case, it simply means the captain thanks the sailor à grands coups de barre de guindeau, i.e. he is indeed a jerk. The cabillot is this: fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabillot_(marine). It is indeed funnier with a cod, and I fully acknowledge that the singer of the shanty is « the seul maître à bord après Dieu »... Cheers! :-)

A question for you...When the Shanty was complaining about the ship and the ship officers, would the crews still sing the song on board the ships?
@SeanDagher
3 жыл бұрын
I suspect that the officers would accept the insults in exchange for having the work done faster, which the shanties ensured. Also, it's a relatively harmless way for the crew to vent their frustration; I imagine the officers would prefer it that way than any other. I'm just speculating as to what the officers thought here, but these songs were DEFINITELY used as ship-board work songs.
