This is traditional Ukrainian rye bread.
When I make it, it feels like my ancestors are kneading it with me.
And this is the Tree of Life, a traditional symbol in Ukrainian culture.
Ukrainians painted it on walls, embroidered on towels, woven into carpets.
It was depicted on chests, in paper cuttings, on Easter eggs, on pottery, and in clothing decoration.
This symbol was present everywhere. But why?
Because this is how our ancestors imagined time, space, life, and death.
It's a symbolic model of the universe.
The roots represent the underworld, the base of the trunk - the world of humans, and the crown - the world of gods.
This Tree of Life symbol is present in the mythologies of many nations.
It can be found among the Maya Indians, in Scandinavian and Greek myths.
