I just started adding this in and I haven’t seen anything else I’ve implemented show more immediate results. Teaching a transition into a chill out is so important.

Thank you so much for this one. My pup is hyper at times and driven for some things for sure. I had already worked out that the remote feeder wasn’t helping (even with the sound disabled) not the clicker, but some great hints here that I will work to incorporate. For relaxation, I have started learning the Trust Technique and I’ve been using it to bring my dogs mind down to a lower level of thinking and to total relaxation when he’s hyper. It’s helping with training too. It’s shown me how much that overthinking gets in the way of- for example, trying to shape pup to climb ramp into truck. He can do all the steps individually but putting it together threw him into panic mode, so I sat in the truck and brought my mind down to the present moment and this brought his down too. After he relaxed (lay down for a bit), a sound distracted him but the magic happened - he trotted up the ramp to join me in the truck and did it over and over quite happily.

Yes I think James’s Trust Technique is an amazing thing for all dog owners to invest their time in, especially those high drive dogs.

I wish I had this video when my dog was younger. My boy, Ivan, was definitely bred for something higher than being a house pet. He's a European Boxer and man does tha dog have drive. It was so rough his first 3 years of his life, I had to learn how to handle it and finally figured him out but he also has calmed down a lot being almost 5 years old. I appreciate him for what he is now but it was so frustrating for both of us when he was young.

@baciliamacias8276 I would say no dog is too old for new training 😊 it may take longer, but I believe it can be done.

@baciliamacias8276 honestly the saving grace for us was to teach him to get his toy when he gets excited. It's like a pacifier lol

I'm sure I've heard you say pretty much everything before that you're relaying in this video, but thank you for putting it all together here, or if you *have* already put it all together before, thank you for offering it in THIS configuration. Sometimes an individual human needs to hear information presented in a different configuration than it was presented other times they've encountered the information, and somehow, this podcast feels like I managed to connect your suggestions and instructions to my 2yr old Aussie cross's behaviours, in a Big Picture way. Maybe it's because my own experience of her/understanding of her/bond with her has evolved to a place where the same information I might have heard from you before on this topic finally matches where my brain is - I don't know - but thank you for never giving up on us.

I am dealing with a two-year-old that checks all the boxes that you mentioned for high drive and frustration. The good news is I have already been doing a few of the things you suggested. Watched it twice and will work on it some more. Thank you!

🎉 First real definition of "high drive" I've heard. The terminology, high drive, is used all over the place, but never is that term defined before used. 👏🏽 👏🏽👏🏽 Fantastic video !

Wow this really helped me understand my husky. He is in really good shape, and he loves to run full speed and play hard, and he is smart as a whip, so I always thought of him as being a high drive dog that is driven to work, but not really driven to work for people lol, more driven to do his own thing. Now I understand that he doesn't have "high drive" in that sense. His response to frustration is definitely suppression every time, he just pretends he found a really interesting smell and ignores you if you make things too hard. He just looks like he has high drive because he is athletic. But the frustration is still there I think. When I first adopted him he was extremely destructive, and just acted out by wrecking stuff, and he still does that, he just acts out by wrecking his own toys and chewing his bones. It is okay that he does that, but maybe his life could be a little more balanced. I think if I can teach him to be more "high drive," as in gradually entice him to try harder when he's frustrated by giving him wins while also not boring him, he will be healthier and more fulfilled and he won't need to chew as excessively to deal with his feelings. It's hard to finesse the line between frustrating him with high difficulty and frustrating him by boring him with low difficulty, either way he just switches off and chews his feelings later.

Thank you so much for this - it is very timely!! When you were describing high drive digs I just kept thinking “yup, yep - that’s my little dude!” He is an ACD mix and MUST have a job… but he also does well with guidance as opposed to more traditional commands or obedience style training.

I’ve lost the plot completely. My shaping involves voice and physical cues. I don’t know how to change, my dog just looks lost if I don’t give hints. The other thing I don’t understand is that in crate games the instructions were to use luring high and back to get the sit, and body cues in the your out your in. So confused about shaping

Thank you so much!! Any tips for what to do in the moment? My high drive puppy (6 months old) completely goes crazy for playing with my boys outside. She will start jumping and biting. We have a hard time catching her because she doges out of the way. When we turn our backs it makes it worse. I would love any tips! Thank you for everything you teach us!

I'm not certain if "high drive" fits for Poppy or not. She's a Springer x Poodle and driven to 1) play with other dogs 2) cuddle with people and 3) be free to do what she wants.
