This ad perfectly captures the essence of Maria Sharapova. She's not just the beauty - she has the brains and the brawn. She backed up the looks department with a stellar resume, including a career Grand Slam that only 10 people in the history of women's tennis has ever achieved.

If Maria had not injured her shoulder in 2007 and had been able to continue performing at the level she displayed in 2006, then she could have challenged Serena at least as well as Azarenka has done (still a lopsided record, but with much more competitive matches). It was too bad that she gradually lost the attributes that enabled her to beat Serena twice in 2004 and nearly a third time in 2005 as she got older.

This was a fairy tale year and period of Maria's career. This ad was played during US Open of 2006 - which she won as her 2nd Slam and as a 19 year old teenager. And she did it in style, wearing the iconic Audrey Hepburn inspired little black dress and besting an equally revered champion in Justine Henin.

THE MOVIE was released in 1961. AFTER the play. THE MOVIE was the one that changed it to "i feel pretty and witty and bright, and i pity any girl who isn't me today." which was the version quoted in Anger Management. It's not common for movie versions of musicals to change lyrics in order to fit the timeline of the movie. Look at Grease and Hairspray. West Side Story THE MOVIE takes place over a shorter time period than the play, thus, changing the lyrics makes the story flow better.

@Theocide84 The original lyric was "bright," actually. They changed it for the movie, because the "I Feel Pretty" scene was moved to daytime, rather than nighttime as in the original musical. So they needed a word that rhymed with "day."

actually, they didn't change anything. the version in this commercial, is the original version of the song. in the original broadway production of West Side Story, the line was "i feel pretty, and witty, and bright, and i pity any girl who isn't me tonight." it was the movie that changed the lyrics to "i feel pretty, and witty, and gay, and i pity any girl who isn't me today."
@mycoo

"Bright" was used in the original Broadway production, and, is still used on stage. however, the movie changed it to "gay" so that it would rhyme with "today", since Tony visits her BEFORE the rumble (which was at night) in the movie.

This is a common misconception. The original lyric is bright, to rhyme with night. In the movie version, Maria sings this song in the day time, so they changed it to gay to rhyme with "day."

No, in the movie, it's "gay" to rhyme with day. But the original broadway production states "I feel pretty and witty and bright. And I pity any girl who isn't me tonight." Since that scene really takes place in the evening, "bright" needs to rhyme with "tonight." In the movie, the scene takes place during the day, so the lyrics were changed ("gay" with "day"). So this is accurate.

Good sir, you have made an excellent point! Thus opening my, somehow, closed mind to view, what simply appears to be, a meaningless television advertisement for some doubtly philosophically concerned commercial products, as a beautiful & realistic interpretation of one's, &, also, most probably by the, I fear, majority of people, shallow view of high-profile individuals, based only by their, shall I say, "looks".

@SkylarPro yeah bowlover is right - the word substitution is basically relevant to the day/night context. The original, lesser known theatrical stage version actually used "bright" to begin with, it was changed to the presumably more suggestive "gay" in the movie for this reason .. Take the adam sandler/jack nicholson scene in 'anger management' for example, they used the "gay" version not only because was more humorous but also because its more relevant during the daytime.

@betumene They only changed it because of the controversy. "Gay" means "happy" in the context of the song, but SOOOO many people just think it means "Homosexual" and that can pretty much be either a good thing or bad thing to them, supporting it or being against it.

PEOPLE! THEY DID NOT CHANGE "GAY" TO "BRIGHT"!! THEY STAYED TRUE TO THE ORIGINAL WEST SIDE STORY. for those of you who know NOTHING about broadway or musicals, let me tell you. West Side Story was ORIGINALLY a broadway musical. NOT A MOVIE. The show opened in 1957. got that? 1957. The lyrics in the ORIGINAL show were "i feel pretty and witty and bright, and i pity and girl who isn't me tonight." just like the commercial.

@hogai95 Gay doesn't mean happy anymore. Gay means homosexual, so if you use it in it's original context, people will either be confused (those who are too young to know), or laugh at its archaic usage. Since Nike obviously paid to be able to alter it, they made it more "today". I don't have a problem with that...still gets the ad's point across.
