In this video we are investigating the Shark APEX UpLight (model LZ601). We start with a discussion of the small dust canister. Bear in mind this vacuum is somewhere between a full size upright and a stick vacuum so we did not expect it to have a large dust canister, however it is still on the small side in our opinion. The Uplight canister has a capacity of 0.68 quarts and we compare this to the dust canister of the full size Shark Pet Pro which has a capacity of 2.8 quarts. The small dust canister on the Uplight means you will be emptying it more frequently than most uprights.
We also found that the APEX UpLight edge cleaning was a little weak. In the video we run an edge cleaning test against the Shark NV752. We placed chili flakes on our carpet up tight against the baseboards and we ran each machine over them (one forward pass and one backward pass). The video shows that the NV752 does a better cleaning job.
We found the movement of the UpLight to be a little disappointing. We expected that such a lightweight vacuum would be extremely easy to move around. While it isn’t that bad, it could certainly be better. Movement on hard flooring is easier than carpet but it still requires more wrist action to turn the machine than we thought it would.
We wish the vacuum had a way to adjust suction. It does not. Adjustable suction can be very handy, for example, if your cleaner head is “sticking” to the carpet (lowering suction can help with movement) and if you are vacuuming delicate items (like some curtains) with the hose/wand/tools. Even a simple device like a suction release slider would have helped. We show a suction release slider on the Shark Navigator Zero-M.
Most DuoClean vacuums (additional soft brushroll at the front of the cleaner head) we have run into have the ability to slow the brushrolls when you are tackling a hard surface. However there is only one speed with the UpLight - and that is fast spinning brushrolls. This can cause some scattering on a hard surface and it also may be an issue for folks who have very delicate hardwood floors.
We like that the vacuum has the lift away feature. It is better than not having it. However we find the implementation rather clumsy. It is a bit annoying to use the hose/wand/tools. The hose and wand don’t really have a good handle to hold and putting everything back together is awkward.
The vacuum power button is placed at the bottom of the vacuum handle. This can result in inadvertently depressing this button while you are vacuuming or while you are using the lift away feature. Perhaps there wasn’t much room on the vacuum body to relocate the button, but its location could be a bit tricky for some - especially if you have large hands.
The APEX UpLight is able to stand on its own thanks to wheels that retract and extend out of the back of the cleaner head. The feature works reasonably well, which is nice. However the wheels are another moving part that get utilized every time you engage/disengage the vacuum. Will they stand the test of time? We don’t know but it’s something to consider.
