The disappearance of South Africa's white sharks is no longer new news, but the real reasons for this drastic change have been overshadowed by the media hype of two titans of the ocean colliding.
According to Chris Fallows' compelling argument, orcas, despite being present, are not the real reason for South Africa's white shark disappearance. Instead, once again, wildlife were sold out with almost unbelievable incompetence.
Chris can be seen in my first documentary at the following link as well as at videos listed on the end screen of this video.www.amazon.com/gp/video/detai...
00:01 Intro, small talk, photography:
Chris’s prints raise funds to save habitat
01:48 No longer sees white sharks. His last significant breach photo was in 2018.
03:27 White sharks require a variety of food sources, not just pinnipeds
04:49 white sharks getting entangled in the long lines that catch smaller sharks
05:38 A whistleblower has revealed how many white sharks were caught on the boat he was on. Multiply this by the other boats and this fishery single-handedly becomes the single largest killer of white sharks known on the planet.
06:18 Affiliated scientists has their academic credential resting upon blaming the orcas.
06:58 Dr. Sara Andreotti’s population estimate was ignored, but if you were to take it seriously it means a total population of 550 was having 100 sharks removed from it yearly via the fishery and the Natal Sharks Board.
07:57 From a socioeconomic point of view the fishery also doesn’t make sense. The money brought in is dwarfed by white the presence of white sharks brought in. So this doesn’t make sense ecologically, morally, or financially.
$800,000 compared to $70,000,000 annually.
09:00 Why do the naturalists on the water every day continue to be ignored ?
11:20 Responding to pressure, the government conducted a test based on only three sets of longlines, which is too small a sample size to base any true results on. Even still, 2 of 3 of those sets caught and killed white sharks. So their own attempt to prove this wasn’t impacting white sharks proved that it was, and this STILL didn’t matter.
14:54 Comparing California’s white shark protection history and South Africa’s makes it even more mind boggling what South Africa chose to do. South Africa basically did the exact opposite of what was proven to help white sharks in California.
15:58 Turns out they were fishing in a marine protected area with impunity which nullifies the argument of all the work and studies that went into creating the MPA.
17:25 Chris and others gathered evidence and built a court case against the authorities who were denying the fishing taking place in the MPAs, but this effort has been effectively defeated by being stalled in court for 4 years.
18:00 Taxpayer funded studies, which should be publicly available, had to be demanded via the information act through an effort by Enrico Genari.
20:00 Who benefitted from selling out the wildlife?
21:57 Octopus fishery, drowning whales, jobs, ethics, and ecology…
