The Gaelic name of this lovely tune is Siuil a Run. Clannad sings that version so lovely! Jon Tams does a remarkable job with this version!!! Simply brilliant!!! Mr. Tams, you are a master of your profession brother!!!

lyrics: Here I sit on butternut Hill Who would blame me cry my fill Every tear would turn a mill Johnny is gone for a soldier Shule shule, shule agrah His nets and creel are laid away Till he comes back I'll rue the day Johnny is gone for a soldier With fife's and drums he marched away War dost came he couldn't stay Till he comes back I'll rue the day Johnny's gone for a soldier Shule shule, shule agrah His nets and creel are laid away Till he comes back I'll rue the day Johnny is gone for a soldier I'll sell my ruck, I'll sell me reel I'll even sell my spinning wheel Buy my love a coat of steel Johnny's gone for a soldier Shule shule, shule agrah His nets and creel are laid away Till he comes back I'll rue the day Johnny is gone for a soldier

Yep, this is an traditional irish folk song called Siúil a Rúin or sometimes in Ireland Siúil a Ghrá. The oldest surviving version in Ireland is the macaronic version with the chorus in irish ( gaeilge ) and the verses in english, probably mid 18th century. If there was an older all irish version then it has been lost. Siúil a Ghrá Walk my love ( grá is irish for love ) Siúil a Rúin Walk my secret (love) ( Rún is irish for secret )

@@Toasty_Britches Sharpe's Battle, season 3, episode 2. 1 hour, 5 minutes, 52 seconds in. I went and looked for you. I will say, there are some good covers with others doing the song, though nothing beats what was in the episode. Hope this helps.
