maybe i`ve seen way too many historical drama`s set during this time in history, but i have to admit i have a thing for ladies who wear the type of dresses that the girls were wearing in this clip, and a lovely dress is made even more easy on the eye, by the pretty young ladies who are wearing them in this sharpe adventure.

during this part of the episode i could almost feel sorry for captain carlin, who despite being an officer and a gentleman at least appears to be doing his duty and is at least trying to look after a seemly almost empty barracks, and despite the fact that he`s obviously trying hi s best to keep it all together, even if he is trying to have a bit of fun while he`s doing it, and perhaps having a bit too much fun at that, but at least he`s trying and although a bit stupid he doesn`t know much about anything so he`s mostly harmless, and then he`s just his day ruined by sharpe turning up and he`s now in shock that such an officer is now in front of him as he probably thought that he was in europe somewhere and would never turn up here let alone would be giving him orders, and then when sharpe leaves and is apparently killed he probably thought that`s the end of the matter and he doesn`t have to worry about seeing him again, so ok so far so good, but then later in the episode when sharpe is obviously not dead and is very much alive and even show`s up at the camp at foulness and then apparently after arresting girdwood is now the commanding officer, and then comes out of the the officers quarters and captain carlin is seen to be standing there, i can at that moment perhaps feel a bit less sorry for him, and not only wonder what part he has played in all of this, but also perhaps wonder exactly what his orders were at chelmsford barracks, and although he now seems to be sharpes whipping boy, after all of what happened perhaps he deserves some payback.

apparently during this sharpe adventure, major sharpe is trying to get recruits for the south essex regiment, despite the fact that he has in his ranks soldiers from ireland, soldiers from london, soldiers from cheshire, soldiers from oxfordshire, and off course it`s being led by someone from yorkshire, who knew that at least during this time in history that essex was such a large county, because it seems to cover most of england at the very least, and although sharpe is indeed trying to get soldiers for a regiment that is based in essex, but one look at his soldiers and he may as well try get these men from just about any where in england, and even if there is indeed a army camp based in foulness, when the officers come and purchase these recruits they may well indeed become scattered in dozens of regiments anyway, so you may well have been born and raised in essex, but goodness knows where your going to end up next.

although i`ve read all the sharpe books, i have to say something stupid and say i prefer the television series, and although back in the day when i possibly had a bit more time on my hands i went to a library and read most of the books, and then bought the lot and finished reading them at home, let alone read any future books, i don`t think that it helps that when these books were first published back in the 80`s or whenever i didn`t know that they existed let alone read them, and back in the 90`s when sharpe came on tv i`m not sure that i remember too much about watching them, so i mostly catched up on video, and although the books are really an extremely exciting read and take you even further into the world of sharpe what with my limited time and a busy life, and not reading many books these days, i find it quicker to just watch a television series, and around about the time that sharpes regiment and the following stories were on tv this was when i especially really got into watching the series, if i have any complaints about this series it`s that it had to finish with waterloo, when i would not had a problem with it going on for a few more series yet, but off course he did turn up in india but even with harper in it, it just was not the same.

so imagine that a tall scary and scared soldier who obviously has a nice sun tan from further afield comes into your regimental barracks, and has an air of authority, and is carrying an officers sword, and not just any sword but one that`s not for show but to brutally kill someone, and wears round his waste a officers red sash, and with him is a regimental sergeant major who would off course not be with a private soldier, but only a officer of high rank, and the ladies are startled by this strange soldiers appearance, you really do have to wonder who exactly doe`s captain carlin think that he`s speaking to, and i don`t think it probably helps that he wouldn`t know a battle field soldier, if one was standing in front of him, which off course one is, and let alone the fact that his commanding officer is a buffoon, and his fellow officers are basically useless, and only out for what they can get, but off course this will soon all change.

during this time in the british army when you could pay to be an officer, and had to be rich to do this, i can only imagine that the only was that a private could advance his career apart from being made up to a sergeant, would be to do something so brave and possibly a bit suicidal like a forlong hope or capturing a french eagle or whatever, to possibly even hope to made into an officer, and even then no doubt probably start off as an ensign and not possibly straight away be made into a leutanant but off course this was very probably extremely rare.

considering that these nice posh officers have just now had there day ruined by sharpe coming onto the scene, and the look of horror on carlin`s face is painful in the extreme when he soon realise`s that this gutter snipe outranks him, and is indeed the devil that is major richard sharpe, and especially when he no doubt thought of him being away on some foreign battle field, and certainly never in front of him, and i don`t think that it helps that sergeant major harper is also there, because one look at the sight of harper coming towards you, and especially if he`s shouting at you, and you cannot possibly do much about it but obey, and although we don`t really know what happened at this barracks next with sharpe and harper, i can only imagine that who ever is charge at foulness got so scared and really upset by sharpe and harper`s appearance that they thought that they had no course of action but to resort to murder, and because these posh types were mainly thinking about there wallets, who can blame them, and being the posh idiots that they are if some apparently posh type of officers turned up then they may well indeed have got away with even more skullduggery, and of course a back hander or two would no doubt have helped the situation, but off course in reality the heroes that are sharpe and harper turn up, god help them.

apparently in this scene we find out that captain carlin is some sort of posh idiot, and is so busy trying to impress the young ladies and be a gentleman that although i`m sure that he`s trying his best, he`s innocent of any wrong doing and off course he`s shocked by not only sharpe`s appearance but also he`s clearly got no clue about anything really, bless him, which is fine until we spot him at the foulness training camp, the naughty boy, and by now him being at chelmsford earlier seems even more dodgy now, and let alone sinister, and you do have to not only wonder what carlin`s role in all of this is, but also possibly who told the rest of the soldiers at foulness that sharpe was prying into there affairs, and goodness knows exactly what carlin was doing when sharpe and harper were being chased through the marshes, and how many pieces of silver did it take for carlin to keep his mouth shut, and considering that later on carlin and the other officers now find out that apparently sharpe is now there commanding officer, and they give him some old story of not knowing much about what was going on, and off course they were under orders etc, after all of this you do have to wonder how it would be possible for sharpe to trust them, and if he indeed does, then he`s a better man than me.

although i understand that at least some of the soldiers here at this barracks have indeed seen action in a battle and especially the one with the false leg who seemed to have been in a battle with sharpe, and although this does seem to be a very dangerous thing to do especially if sharpe is after promotion, at least he survived, but you do have to wonder if the likes of carlin has ever been near a battle let alone in one, but off course that`s all going to change soon, and i can only imagine that the rich officers help in selling the lower ranks and get richer still, and while they send them off to possibly get killed they alone are safe at home in england and if your carlin apparently having a very nice time too, and if sharpe does indeed need to get new recruits to take back to spain with him then he could probably do a lot worse than think about taking with him all the soldiers that seem to hang about not doing much in the average jane austen or whatever period drama, and seem to do not much more than go to balls and chat to the local ladies, or maybe even he could nick some of the local milita who although seem to be all rich stuck up toffs on horses, at least seem to be very well trained, because thats mostly what they do all day, and i can only imagine that for the average person during this period of history and it being the georgian era or regency or whatever, that unless your a part of the army or navy then although you may indeed read something about a battle in a newspaper, thats off course if you can indeed read if at all, its possible that these events maybe happening somewhere else than in england, so you may indeed be more concerned with your daily life to care to much about what is possibly happening on some foreign field somewhere.

does everyone in the army know what sharpe looks like, has horse guards told chelmsford barracks that he`s coming, apparently not because of the look of surprise to say the least on carlin`s face, does sharpe carry his orders with him, because hopefully they would not only say what he`s here to do, they would also hopefully tell everyone that this officer is indeed major sharpe, and since sharpe has come all this way from spain to england to apparently find his second battalion at chelmsford, and off course he went to horse guards first of all, and with them no doubt having knowledge of his visit, did there very best to fob him off, and since that this scandal has possibly been going on for a great number of years and anyone in the know have either received a pay off or perhaps even been murdered, the one`s involved in this scandal are indeed by know extremely capable of dealing with those who would want to snoop and pry where no one want`s them to, and off course it help`s that this scandal is at the very heart and top of government, and with sharpe arriving in london and asking far too many questions, it`s bad enough that he`s there in front of the very people who are doing these immoral deeds, but whats no doubt worse is that he`s not putting his hand out for a bribe, like everyone in government etc seem to be doing, and off course he probably won`t go away and simply give up, and in the end his persistence is what makes someone try to murder him and harper, and i can only imagine that the only reason why he is suddenly not being followed anymore is because he is assumed to be no more, and although it`s in theory perfectly ok to join the regiment at foulness as lowly privates, not only is it lucky that they get away with it, but later on when they turn up at head quarters apparently not dead after all, not only is it extremely lucky they don`t get murdered yet again, but when they do go back to foulness but off course this time in there full uniforms, you do have to wonder what sort of orders if any that they are carrying with them, because they do seem to more or less wonder into foulness and take over, and while this is apparently effective and works, not only does sharpe give girdwood a slap, he`s lucky that he`s insane and a coward, and while not many there apparently questioned his authority or indeed his right to be there in the first place, and especially not him taking over command, you do have to wonder if what he did was in the strictly sense legal, but if he`s turning up at foulness to bring this wickedness to a stop, surely he`s acting in the armies best interists, and hopefully he has the moral high ground, and i can only imagine that him being able to not only turn up at this army camp and get away with what he did, but he`s also very lucky that he`s next not turning up dead, with his bottom sticking out of the ground and making a nice bayonet holder, and when this scandal is finely found out it seems that he only survives because the posh lady turns up, without her presence goodness knows what would have happened to him in the end.

is sharpe allowed to give the other young officer a slap, and why does this young officer have to line up with the common soldiers is it because he is a ensign, and if this is the case does harper being a sergeant major technically out rake him, or is he more or less on the same level, and i suppose harper having his new rank would probably be a non commissed offficer, and if sharpe does indeed order the ensign to join the ranks i suppose he would probably have to do it, and apart from a senior officer let alone girdwood turning up and outranking sharpe and telling this young officer something different, and offcourse they having to obey because sharpe is the senior officer at the barracks let alone from there regiment, and also possibly being from the first battalion so already hes probably senior to most in the second battalion, but what happens when sharpe then leaves the barracks and isn`t there to give out orders anymore does carlin have to still carry out his orders, or because he then is the senior officer again does he do what he thinks is best, and offcourse to get rid of any confusion etc, someone from the second battalion did of course at least try to kill sharpe and harper.
