Werner’s father was world renowned conductor Otto Klemperer (1885 - 1973) and his mother was soprano Johanna Geisler, but he found that he had very little musical aptitude. Leaving Nazi Germany in 1933, the family settled in Los Angeles after his father became conductor at the LA Philharmonic. Werner found his interest in acting as a high school student.

This is so cool! We get to see Robert Vaughn, David McCallum, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and Werner Klemperer all together. Shatner, Nimoy and Klemperer were still struggling to get acting roles as they were just starting out as actors. This episode shows them before they later became famous.

I don't think "struggling" is the right word. Nimoy landed a couple of supporting roles on "Gunsmoke" in the late 50s as a Native American Indian and Shatner's career took off after two classic "Twilight Zone" eps in the early 60s. Werner Klemperer had a tougher hill to climb, but can be seen in an early haunted U-boat episode of "One Step Beyond" Leading roles for German actors was scarce. "Hogan's Heroes" made him a household name. They all did quite well in a short period of time.

I saw an interview by Nimoy years later about this episode. He said while both played a large acting part this brief encounter was the only contact they had. At the time, both were fairly unknown, each playing bit parts and didn't know each other as actors. They didn't chat off-camera as they just did the quick camera take, each moving on to their next acting scene. Nimoy in the interview talked about how a year into the startrack series he and Shatner were talking about past acting projects and found they both did a "Man from Uncle". As they chatted they concluded they both had been in the same episode, but both being unknown actors, and such a brief encounter they had no memory of the meet. After viewing the show it was only then they put it all together they had made brief contact, and is looked back as their first acting scene together.

Coincidentally both started their careers is scifi. Shatner was a guest on a Canadian scifi, Space Command, in 1953 which ran 150 episodes. A series regular was James Doohan, later known as Scotty. Did *they* remember they had worked together? Serial with 15 minute episodes could keep kids coming back to the theater for half a year in the 1930s and 1940s. TV killed that off. One of the last serials made was Zombies of the Stratosphere (1952) which had in its credits "And introducing Leonard Nimoy". Despite the title it was about the vanguard espionage force from Mars lurking in Los Angeles. Nimoy played an alien from another planet but don't worry; he joined our side.

No matter how hard I try, I can't stop thinking this is an elaborate plot of Kirk and Spock, to achieve...something.

As a Trekkie, Iam psyched to know Nimoy and Shatner were in Man From U.N.C.L.E. my bestie happens to watch the modern movies and I talk to her about it. Its like a crossover~!😆

It may just be the direction or the script, but Shatner already looks quite polished/smooth here. Even Werner Klemperer looks good, what a shame his rep was " bruised " by his Colonel Klink role.

Shatner was a stage actor long before he was doing tv, and he was doing tv back in the 50s. See, e.g., kzitem.info/news/bejne/zKyo2WZmrqKbnKQ or kzitem.info/news/bejne/mpV31ZmYenOammk

Good clip, it was also nice seeing Colonel Klink (Werner Klemperer) working beside Leonard Nimoy. Sadly, they don't make good programs like that anymore, that was a great classic series.

Given their somewhat complicated history, it's fitting Nimoy and Shatner's first scene together every was Spock using a gun on Captain Kirk.

Technically, it was their second, after the drunk scene. But your point is well taken.

This is a scene from the original Man From Uncle TV series. Robert Vaughn is there and the "dead" man with the mustache is David McCallum. Vaughn mentions Mr. Waverly who in the series was portrayed by British actor Leo G. Carroll
