Shaun Martin, a member of the Grammy Award-winning jazz fusion band Snarky Puppy, has passed away at the age of 45. The band confirmed the news on their social media accounts.
Martin, known for his performances with Snarky Puppy, had stepped away from the public eye in April 2023 to address an undisclosed illness. His death was announced on Instagram, Facebook, and X, where the band expressed their grief, calling Martin a "music legend" and a "beautiful, luminous human being."
His wife, Monica Wilson Martin, also shared the news on Facebook, stating that the family had been focused on surrounding him with love and the best medical care since April. She expressed that they must now accept God's will.
Martin, a seven-time Grammy award winner, began his musical journey in Dallas, his hometown. He attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and the University of North Texas. His career included working with gospel choir director Kirk Franklin and singer Erykah Badu.
As a member of Snarky Puppy, Martin contributed to the band's five Grammy Awards. He also won four Grammys for his work with Kirk Franklin. Beyond his contributions to various artists' recordings, Martin served as the minister of music at Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas. In 2015, he released his debut solo album "7 Summers," followed by two more albums blending jazz, gospel, and R&B.
Mark Lettieri, another member of Snarky Puppy, paid tribute to Martin on Instagram, describing him as "an absolute force in music" and reminiscing about their 18 years of making music together.
A benefit show in Dallas had been planned for September 14 to celebrate Martin's life, featuring performances by artists such as Badu, Norah Jones, and Snarky Puppy.
