That insecurity has been a persistent issue frankly his entire career, but I'm not surprised having your first major relationship engulfed in the public eye will do that do you especially for the writing on this album. It made sense the more I think about it. I might have gone with Taylor Swift in this route on maybe a stronger connection towards themes on this album as Mendes also makes his more experimental pivot, they have worked together, and if anyone can understand Mendes angst as a mentor figure, it might be Swift here if only cause while she doesn't compare in that pop star pedestal, she has been often criticized for her own brand of art causing major consequences and the expectation of being a role model to her fanbase (parasocial). I was gonna say Ed Sheeran given darker impulses in their writing, but that's a crapshoot.

My main problem with this album is because I feel like all the hype and drive around the album was surrounding his relationship with Camila. It felt really sadly boring like especially with all the other music that came out that night. I wish he was evolving in the vein of his last album which I thought was really good and like a good trajectory. But for me, this album is like Taylor Swift gone wrong like when she's being super obvious and she is at her worst. SO I couldn't get the image of Camila and him out of my head for every single thing he tries to do on the album. I was let down. I do respect it though, it feels like he tried to make a folklore or harry styles (self-titles) but it just failed. 2/10 I think the only thing that saves it a little is that it sounds like he believes what he's talking about at least

This might be a controversial opinion but the way Mark analysed this album (I haven't listened to it yet) kinda confirms,at least for me, the rumours that the shawn mendes/camilla cabello relationship is just a PR or possibly even a bearding relationship, I think you wouldn't have this much anxiety in a real relationship and not break up at some point.

@@navajooon His sexuality shouldn't matter tbh, but I'll echo what Honest said a year ago and it's true on the album. While I think the anxiety on this album has its merit, from the outsider looking in, it feels mighty strange to talk about "going into cold sweats" whenever you have gay rumors come your way and have been dealing with this for a while, it can allude that you aren't telling us the whole story. But I do get it, men have a standard to not show any sign of vulnerability like Mendes is doing now, but it feels odd that right after that came in the public, he started dating Camila during the time Señorita was dropping. Then given that Camila is trying to frame their relationship as well, there is some angst that is still not explained fully. I'm not gonna say the relationship is a PR stunt (cause that is a complicated issue to delve into and it really is kind of disrespectful in its own right), but I doubt everything is alright on their end.

@justezek8596

I agree and disagree. I do support Mark's rationale for doing that hoping that if the major release is in the same video, it would wind up getting grouped with other releases that could be up your fancy like some country projects that I like. Yes, it feels better to have that analysis on a bigger album for reference points, but it does take longer and more time to create than even your typical album review on On The Pulse and really it can go both ways. Luckily for a lot of y'all, just on Twitter, there are plans for more solo reviews in 2021 along with more analysis on the big releases.
