Shchors is not a rare movie but this copy has the old English subtitles imprinted. Ukrainian filmmaker Olexander Dovzhenko was ordered by Stalin in 1934 to produce a high budget war movie about a Ukrainian communist hero devoid of Ukrainian cultural characteristics. Shchors is the result. The film took about 5 years to produce since Dovzhenko had to rewrite the screenplay and reshoot numerous scenes over. This was filmed during the purges of the 1930s as former heroes became enemies of the state and had to be written out of the script. The result is a rather interesting war movie and should be viewed as such. The film is in Russian with some Ukrainian here and there.
Trivia: There are 2 versions of Shchors - this long version which is the directors cut and also a 1 hour 50 minute TV version which has more fast paced music.
