Several years later I'm not 3 or 4 years old, on my mother's Birthday my grandfather handed her a huge jar full of cash. She asked him what this was for, and he responded "This is all of the money you have given me for rent. I know you have been looking to get a new car because yours had stopped working. there's 11,000 in the jar to help you put a down payment on one." @@funnyminute7290I think that's far more cynical than even I can be. And I'm about as cynical as a person can be. I've not watched the series in its entirety, but have seen maybe a dozen or so episodes, grandpa and grandma obviously have feelings for both their daughter and granddaughters, but the estranged relationship from daughter has given them limited access to the granddaughter, and the strained relationship has caused marital problems between Grandma and Grandpa as well, so the money isn't important at all to them, if anything I suspect that the Grandpa sees it as an investment in his granddaughter to ensure she has the best possible advantage in life. He could care less if he gets any of the money, but as her only real father figure, he knows that the weekly dinner, something that has done the family unit some good, even if it is a bit strained on some nights, he also sees her taking on some responsibility and as father figure in her life he knows that the improved relationship between the time together has given her confidence enough to approach and ask. That right there shows him that the family night dinners are good for everyone involved. Especially the granddaughter.

Since I was a little boy, I always wanted a farm where I could keep animals that were too old or weak so that I could take care of them. My grand father had a farm and gave me some land to use just for that, I started very young, at 7 years old, and he helped me every single day, after school, with the animals, provided me with the funds and we did everything together. Decades passed and he encouraged me to become a vet and he would even call me to see his animals but he always insisted he pay for my visits. He was the only one at my graduation, shouted and cheered so loud when I came on stage, he got a sore throat. He was always on my side, backed me up no matter what. Before he passed away, he gave me that piece of land as a gift, I was blown away by it. In his will he said, "To my little Ben, who isn't little any more (I'm 6'10"), this was always your land, I was just keeping it safe for you. May you help many more animals." The weekly visit is the interest the grand-parent wants....That's why grandma lights up when she said that...Then, grandpa completed the hook by adding an additional 5 -7 years of weekly visit...all the same making sure she would be financially stable before payback. GrandPa is the GOAT.

I was (un)fortunate to know my dad's mother. It's strange, I knew she loved me as a child, and as soon as my cousin's were born, she never spoke to me again. She lived like 4 miles away, and my mam's home phone number has been the same all of my life, yet she never reached out. When me and my dad were still on good terms I asked for her phone number so I could ring her, the phone rang, she answered, I said hi it's me, and she hung up without saying a word. Guess it's a good thing my other grandparents were the best I could have ever asked for

It is a great blessing and privilege, to have someone, in your life, who has this type of disposable income and for them to be willing to spend that income on you. I was lucky to have such a person in my life, in my youth. Looking back, I can't imagine what I'd have done or where life would have taken me if I hadn't had access to that safety net. They didn't want the money back. It started when she was 15 and her single mother couldn't afford to send her to a very expensive private school. Mom had issues with her parents, but went to them to ask for the money anyways. They gave it as long as they got regular access to their granddaughter (before this they only got to see her on holidays). When Rory graduated high school, mom paid the money back and the access was somewhat cut off again (Rorys was never consulted on this). Rory needed money to pay for college, and that's the scene that is here. She wanted to see them more often, and this gave her a reason. It's a weird family dynamic.

Do it the way Norwegian student loan works. Be a regular loan, but if you are strained economically, lose your job or get disabled, the loan is either frozen, with or without interest freeze as well, or erased all together. Having a manageable debt to pay in your young yeara can teach you about living below your means, so it's not necessarily a bad thing (also gives you more economic freedom as a student because it allows the state to pay out more when some of the money eventually will come back as well). If you really don't want to get the money back, do still accept the loan installments, put it in an index fund and pay it out all together when you young relative is preparing to buy an apartment. There is no other time in a normal Western citizens life where you feel more economically inadequate than when you are about to buy your first home.
