The only thing I didn’t like about the casting of this film was the Hilly character. She was supposed to be just that tiny bit overweight, like she had been a beauty queen and married the football star, but then her idyllic life didn’t go quite as well as she planned, her husband was a cheater, her kids brats, and she indulged herself with food in a self-soothing manner. But she never admitted she had lost her girlish figure, and since she terrorized the other ‘society’ ladies, no one was brave enough to let her know she wasn’t all that as she acted. Bryce Dallas Howard was too thin and pretty for the role, in my opinion. Hilly being overweight explained the secret self-loathing which she took out on every other character, *especially* ‘The Help’, because abuse of women of color in the south was condoned.

That last line from Skeeters mother is amazing writing honestly.... Its such a simple and effective way of demonstrating how woman in the south can cut you so deeply by using wit, charm and the power of her words. It reminds me of the writing they did for Fiona Goode on AHS, or "the night the lights went out in Georgia" monologue just to name a couple examples.... Even Hilly gets some good reads in this movie. As well as her mother...
