I feel for this lady. She has her own life, her own priorities. She needs a reliable car. She doesn't need drama, BS, and new expenses. She's clearly just trying to be responsible and take care of things, but she doesn't know cars, so people try to take advantage of her. Ugh. Makes me sick.

I had a VW Passat get a trashed engine from Pep Boys overfilling the oil, driving down the highway it dumped its load and immediately low oil warning then knocking... Luckily Pep Boys covered half the cost of a brand new engine and 100% of the labor for the swap. Never again have I gone to big box mechanics for anything.

To be fair, some manufacturers are known to use dabs of RTV over the gap where a front cover gasket would meet with the valve cover gasket. Ford's 5.4 liter comes to mind, as does GM and the lacking end seals on their intake manifolds, back in the day. Technically, you were supposed to let the RTV cure before use which could explain why he said to leave it alone until the next day. Couldn't tell what motor this was, but it's possible he was trying to be on the safe side. Don't know what to say about the oil level being overfull though.

I had a 95 windstar that was over full before and some time after it turned out to be an ecu that was causing an injector to fire all the time. We reflashed it but did not fix it, ended up replacing ecu, and it solved the issue.
@francisphillipeck4272
Ай бұрын
The proper procedure for RTV is apply, tighten fasteners by hand as much as you can, then after an hour torque to spec then after 24 hours you can refill with fluids. So to do it right it does take overnight to reseal something. Most people will refill after the first hour tho and its usually fine

It's funny how I was never taught that in school or when I was in the shop. I knew there was a cure time, but neither the customer or the shop has 24 hours more to wait for the total cure time.

Parker you never replaced a failed valve cover gasket with Permatex? It has to dry and cure. Some cars the “gasket kit” is a few o rings and a tube of Permatex. I reckon you don’t see much of that or you wouldn’t have said that but depending what you used for a gasket you do have to wait. But you’re supposed to wait an hour or few hours to torque the bolts back down. I have had to use Permatex on water pumps, thermostat housings, valve covers, anywhere not exposed to gasoline or exhaust. It used to be the standard, every parts counter and most mechanics told you to Permatex your paper gaskets or skip hunting down a gasket and make on from Permatex. Different colors have different cure times. Now for some things you can find a rubber like valve cover gasket and that ain’t bad but for some things it’s not an option or it has to be ordered and drives costs up too. Felpro sold a valve cover gasket kit for the Saturn SL2’s that was 4 o rings for the spark plug tubes and a tube of black Permatex. Pretty sure they sold the same thing for other models with similar architecture.
