One of my trilingual children threw in a French phrase perfectly while speaking German (they also speak Spanish and English). I swear I heard angels singing because I make such an effort to raise my children with as many languages as possible. It's been a very cool and successful experiment.😊

Isn't it tragic that gift is used to encourage this sort of behavior. I know in this case she is a friend to the person she speaks on. But I also know she will inevitably lose friends as an adult when they discover she ish talks them in her heritage language, knowing full well they probably don't understand. It's always a shock to them when they _are_ understood. And it never ends nicely, people end up heartbroken.

It could be her father was speaking to her in Chinese and that’s simply what she continued in. Her father switched to English and she replied in English

Also possible she’s copying her parents who probably also speak Chinese in front of others rather than her understanding why. At this age, she would probably do this in front of any stranger until she learns later who probably speaks Chinese and who probably doesn’t

@@trdestruction6678It really depends on what the person is saying meant for it to be. Saying that your skin is white in Chinese means that they are rich and never had to work out in the sun. This can both mean they are pampered and spoilt, not knowing the true harshness of the outside world or it could mean they rich and have a comfortable life so their life is safe and stable. My mother would use it both ways sometimes while talking about others but mostly as an insult lol
