Am I the only one who sees a Battlestar Galactica Cylon robot in this pen?

I was deeply moved by the your recounting the profound conversation you had with Joost. I was struck by the emotional vulnerability you both revealed and am touched that you felt safe sharing the exchange with us. Allow me to pause to wipe a tear from my eye. I’m a little verklempt. I am partial to Sheaffers because they were the first fountain pens I had (thanks, Mom). Like tobydeemer, that nostalgia has stuck with me. I don’t have any with hooded nibs, though; like you, they annoy me. This was a fair review, despite your biases. Well done.

the pen that got me into fountain pens way back in high school was a sheaffer prelude at the local office max. couldn't convince the parent to indulge me, but I finally nailed one down. still have a special place for that one. weird how odd moments like that stick around.

have Sheaffer 300 and Intensity - I love pens that are heavy enough to qualify as a workout. - gave some mechanical pencils to the young nieces (different brand) asked "not going to say anything about the weight"? - they acknowledged the weight, I responded "if its not heavy enough to kill someone, its not heavy enough to do work"

Just got this pen, and I’m really impressed. I think the nib is cool, and as someone who prefers EF nibs, it writes very well.

I’m actually a big fan of the modern Sheaffer pens, so I appreciate this review. I would probably opt for the medium. I agree with you about hooded nibs, but this pen does look very cool.

I bought an Icon in a sale, as reviews described the medium nib as more of a fine nib, which I wanted. I also wanted it for that metal body and weight and that is the best thing about the pen for me. The nib is nowhere near as good as Faber Castell nibs in their cheaper pens, but overall the pen does the job that I wanted it for, in daily use, and at the sale price I paid I would buy it again.

I have a Parker 51 and a few clones and I have the same rolling issue. For $30 more, the steel nibbed capless. For $30 less, the Majohn A1. Both will write better, as long as you like fine points!

I find this a very nice pen to use and look at from aesthetic perspective. Finger prints do polish off when you’ve finished using it. I’m a fan of hooded nibs and I find this fine medium quite acceptable. I was told by a stall owner at a recent pen show that an Indian businessman has taken over the Sheaffer company and to expect big things.

@@tradebuzzscalptradinglive7296 Thanks for that. I hope they do the right thing by Sheaffer a very innovative pen manufacturer I have a soft spot for. I don’t like what the current owners of Parker (Watermaid?) did with the new Parker 51. The pen doesn’t work for me with that screw cap in terms of user-friendly functionality. It should be a slip-cap. Also a better than a better quality nib than a Vector.

"That just means there's something wrong with you." LOL. Love it and love Sheaffers. They have made some spectacular writing and looking nibs. This particular model reminds me of the Ferrari of a few years ago.

It reminds me of the Legacy but it is interesting and a bit disappointing that they haven't returned to the inset nib. Those upturned nibs are some of my favorites. I guess the semi-hooded nib saves money. Also interesting that they returned to the proprietary converter which Sheaffer had, I believe, dropped when it was owned by Newell, Rubbermade . I am glad to see something new out of Sheaffer which was sold to the William Penn Company in 2022, India's largest retailer of writing instruments. Indian companies seem to be making a significant move into the fine pen market. Magna Carta is doing very interesting things with materials and nibs. Ranga is selling through a number of retailers rather than doing all its own distribution. Now we need someone to take Waterman away from Newell Brands, which has been terrible for them. I don't think they have made a new model in many years.

Vintage Sheaffer's? Iconic designs copied by many. Lovely writers. But then there's the first Sheaffer I owned... The basic "student" cartridge pen you could still get for under $3 in the early 1990s. Made me forget I had used a pen I still gravitate towards today, the Esterbrook J. Sheaffer was not turning out much worth owning by that point, IMO. Icon definitely shows it's built in China. That hooded nib can be swapped directly with any Chinese hooded nib... I am not opposed to Chinese pens. And though not a favorite with the hooded nib, I do like the way the Icon looks. Thanks for "taking one for the team," Dr Brown!

Reminds me, a little bit, of the Sheaffer I used in Jr. High School but, obviously, far more expensive. I do like the red on black font and the "racing/sports car" sensation while looking at it. I don't mind the hooded nibs too much, but they do tend to roll on me unless I'm really careful. The Lamy 2000 definitely does that.

Fair price for what it is. I like the retro styling with the very modern red and black accents (though I think the cap band is a bit broad). The only Sheaffer I remember writing with was a Targa, which was a treat. If it's anything like that, it's great.

Bitte so weiter machen!!

I love Sheaffer for the most part. Always had one, the cheap student model was the first fountain pen in '62. Bought a Targa, and a 300 of late, and I love those both. I'd probably have an Icon except for that red stripe branding on the grip section. That singularly irks me. Oh, well....

Stephen, it's a good review. I have an Icon in matte black and Red finish in medium size. I like the pen, but unlike my Sheaffer Taranis, the medium nib is on the finer side. Also, not sure if Icon is available in Broad size. Have so far only seen F and M size. Just wished if the nib was more wet.

I like the design of this pen, though not this shiny chrome version. I have the matte black version with red in the clip and the center band, and there’s also a green and a Blue. Mine writes smoothly. It did dry out after I left it unused for a while and I wasnt able to get it going by priming the feed by twisting the converter, so I had to refill it from the bottle, which was weird. I like that it came with a converter but the converter is very dark so it’s almost impossible to see how much ink is in there.

Great review as usual although the point when you said "reverse writing for the people who enjoy" and suddenly the scratchiness reached the nails-in-chalkboard threshold, ouch! Kudos to the design, I would love to have one but with a nib that actually flows :) Any frankenpen meisters in the comments?

I had this pen but sold it. It was not because of the nib but I found the grip to be very slippery. If there was a different finish or texture, I would have enjoyed it.
