I insulated all my barns, you can get used hard insulation at the big stores or returned insulation. I got rolls and rolls of insulation that is made with its own breathable wrap that had been returned rolled up terrible by the customer that returned it so rather than pay their employee to reroll it perfectly, they gave it to me for only 5.50 a roll instead of 39.99 if i took it all so I did, What a score. I chat with the floor bosses at the large stores or the owners at lumber yards, contractors, etc. to call me with anything good but cheap. Works for me. The reason I insulated was because when temp outside is cold it creates frost on inside of roof and minute temp gets even a few degrees above freezing that frost layer thaws and drips onto your belongings in shed especially closed ones. It make stuff rust over the long term. I found only open front, say garages or open run in sheds do not get the condensation issues. Can not fight Mother Nature. Where your ramps 3 boards touch the ground I always found free totally flat on one side wallstones laid them where board was going to touch ground, scored ground around shape and then carefully poked down digging dirt out just deep enough for flat side up rock to slip in (deeper than thickness of stone into virgin earth and they will never stay level) giving it a few whacks with hammer to make it level. I did same under each board and 20 years later no rot on ramp bottoms near ground. My first ramps, even top grade pressure treated got punky and rotted within 7 to 7.5 years touching ground. Also man made pavers absorb water so field wall rocks are only thing to use. Just a tip to save money and time. Alot of ole timers let me pick their brains and it saved me fortunes through the years. It is a real nice shed, I like how you put the flashing under door all the way down - it is always wonderful to have nice, dry storage place for sure.

Our driveway is paved, and there is a paved path all the way to where the door of the old shed was. So the bottom of the ramp is actually sitting on the pavement with no ground contact.

If you're worried about security but still want light and natural ventilation, why not just put in a couple of narrow bathroom-style mobile home windows? About the only things that could fit through those would be a baby, a cat, or a small dog. : )

Our land is VERY small, only 50'x100'. The trailer and shed take up half of it, and most of the rest of it is in shadow from trees that are not on our property, so there is not really much room for a garden. We do have a few flowers, tomato plants, and some spearmint.

If you're worried about security, put the window in but don't cut out the plywood. Just drill a whole bunch of small holes in it. Then you can open up the window to get air but nobody would know it was there. You could always cut the plywood out completely at a later date.

Good man, pulling your shirt down for a butt crack free video. LOL You know as well a I do that the ground will heave and shrink over the seasons so even though you get your ramp nice and flat now, later it may not be. Concerning your overhangs, we used to put the soffit in before installing the wall channel. You can run your soffit normally on the longer overhang by putting wood between the trusses halfway out from the wall. Your soffit usually comes out even with the bottom of the fascia board. I don't want to pick on you too much so I won't mention everything I see that is not right. :) The undersill you showed is better called a finish trim since it isn't only used under windows. I did view your place on google earth. You have a good location.

Hi Bill - congratulations on an outstanding jon! So much smart thinking with so many of teh details of this plan. The overhang on teh side for stocking up firewood, the build in constructionoptions of rboth teh window and teh airocn, the height fo rextra shelving and the ramp. All very smart good thinking! Was a pleasure to follow your proces sin this. Just one question about teh ramp I have: why did you not level teh ground and put some tiles undre it, so it woudl be secured not to sink over time or get unsteady with the slight difference in height? That really does not sound like you, cuz you are always so precise and careful. If it rains a lot the ground could slip away in this set up and the ramp could becoem unstable over time. With some tiles under the endings (where it touches the ground) it would have been somewhat more stable. At least, that si what I thought... Can't wait tos ee all teh shelves up! Elizabeth must be thrilled!!! You made life so much easier and more comfortabel for you this way! DOn;t forget the security, alarms, fireextinguisher, camera and so on. I bet your neighbours would all like to have you build one for them too! COuld give you an advantage by making soem extra money maybe. ENjoy, my friend!
@LiveSimpleLiveFree

The bottom end of the ramp is sitting on pavement. It's not going to sink. And it's only slightly out of level. I thought it would be better to leave it a little out of level than to try to build up one side on top of the pavement. right now it sits solid with no rocking.
@saturninc3786
7 жыл бұрын
yes that is what you said in the video. I am just trying to learn from your skills, cuz you have been doing this for decades, and I noticed it. You say it is on pavement, which is not the ground (soil) so then it should be fine. I must hav emisunderstood that. Thanks Bill.

Is the flashing at the bottom of the door important? I finished building a 12x16 building and i have an issue....Not everytime but half the time it rains i have a puddle of water inside the door about a foot and half in! I didnt have the ceiling finished at the time so i didnt know if it was the roof or the door....The building is all metal so i highly doubt its the roof....So im assuming its the door....I didnt know about the flashing until i started watching this video....When i installed the door i used clear silicone on the bottom of the door and inside the bottom door way where it was gonna sit in place! I didnt know if i should build a roof over the door some how or silicone the bottom door seal or try the flashing at the bottom of the door....I have metal all around the door and i have clear silicone all around the door....I just cant see how it can leak...Im puzzled! Any suggestions i would appreciate it....Thank you!
@LiveSimpleLiveFree
7 жыл бұрын
The flashing is there to keep the wood from rotting. If you have a metal building, that's not a issue. Generally, the caulk under the door during installation is what keeps the rain out. Flashing won't stop leaks under the door.
@j.b.p6478
7 жыл бұрын
Just imagine 50% of the time that it rains you walk out, open the door and you see approx 1/2 cup of water thats approx 18" in from the door! Its alittle frustrating to say the least! My last resort is to saw all around the door and maybe add more silicone or build a canopy roof above the door! Its hard to fix an issue when you dont know where its coming from!

Two things. First, after 8 years, my building business is completely gone as far as reputation and word-of-mouth advertising, and I'd have to start all over again from scratch. Second, I'm not as young as I used to be LOL. Just building this little shed almost killed me!! I don't want to go back to that.
