6 years ago, I built a 16x19 shed by myself. I think it cost about $7K. It took me over a month. It was a great experience. I built the trusses on the floor once the walls were up.

Buying was the way to go. I used a company called Sheds Unlimited in Morgantown, Pennsylvania to build the outer shell of my ranch house and a shed. They were both delivered as panels and assembled onsite. Site prep was gravel for the shed and concrete slab for the house. Four men took two days, and I had a finished shed and the exterior of my house was complete with siding, roof, doors, windows…everything. It was amazing to watch them work. I visited their facility before buying and saw that they are buying materials by the railcar load. You made the right choice, now you can put your efforts into “customizing “ the interior.

I’ve built a 2 sheds, mine and my brothers. We both built them together on weekends and didn’t charge each other for labor. Did either of us save money, maybe, maybe not. But we got quality time together and framing is fun once in a while after always working in the shop. To me that was worth it, though I totally understand just buying it too

I think your shed is much better than what I see at Home Depot. I'm on a hill and doubt that a shed could be delivered. For that alone I would build.

People don't realize that time is money. Add your time and your labor from start to finish, and the choice clear. Buy. But if you were in my position back when I built my own shed, I was tight on money. I only built my own because I didn't have enough money to buy the size I needed. My wife and a couple of our kids helped. So, in some cases, building is the only way.

Like with most things it depends - I could build it and I have built an oak framed one myself on my own - lifting the oak beams, doing the foundation (digging by hand...and my only regret as I should have hired a mini digger ) and cladding the ceiling (a lot of hard work scribing....) were the hardest parts - . Now the differential decision: what one is capable of doing (skills), what tools does one have, how much time one has, how long it can take, how much fitness one has, is one earning more money / hour than what the labour (per hour) will cost... these are some of the factors where a decision can fall onto one side or the other. The greatest benefit of one building his/her own shed? I have built mine exactly as I wanted it to be, something impossible to achieve with any shed building company unless one gets a designer / architect and a carpentry to make a one off but that will cost a fortune which is exactly the reward I expect to get when my property finally gets sold with the oak frame outbuilding I did (I don't like to call it a shed - sits on a concrete base raised by 4 brick layers where the oak beams seat on) attached to it. When I move it is certain I'll be building another outbuilding from scratch but a larger one this time and as long as the available area and planning permission allows me that much! For most people buying a ready made one is however what makes sense indeed. Great maths and an appealing post, thank you.

I built mine specifically to save money and to learn, but I was in no rush. Site prepped and built it over the course of a few months. Building rafters is annoying lol had a few helping hands along the way. I did all the framing with a good ole fashioned hammer. lol 10x12 shed. I probably spent 3k total and labor was free. Depending on your situation, for sure I’d just buy it. lol

Your shed looks great. I don't have an opening large enough in my fence to have a pre-built shed put into my back yard. A shed made from pre-built components would be the way to go in that regard, and to have their crew assemble it, or do it myself would add another decision/cost point. For their small food truck business, my neighbors put together a modest 5 X 8 resin based shed about seven years ago. By all accounts, it's held up quite well. Reasonably priced too.

Cheaper to build it yourself. If building is even a consideration, most people already have the tools. It's not that complicated. The problem for most people is time. Finding the time to do it in a timely manner.
@TodaysCraftsmen

I’d say typically you’d be better off working and generating income during the time you’d spend building the shed. You can probably make more doing whatever you do for a living unless you’re a very well-rounded carpenter.

@@TodaysCraftsmen If you make 6k in less than a week, building a shed probably never even crosses your mind. Most sane people would build the shed on their off days. Some people don't consider working every day of their life a good thing. Building something with your hands can be a good way to relieve stress and bring balance to your life so it's not all dollars and cents. Like I said, finding the time to do it is usually the biggest hurdle as life does on with other obligations.

I have been thinking of adding a much smaller shed in my limited space. Looking at what is commercially available and what I can afford the quality is pretty awful. In this case it seems that building might be a better option just to get a decent end result

Curious on how far a trip it was from build site to your place as a factor of when far is too far, delivery cost wise. So many variables into this choice but from the outside, I definitely see how your time and expertise was better spent in your craft than in doing it just because you know how.
