Welcome to part 10 of the Sheffield Lost Stations series.
We're heading south out of Sheffield station today and looking some of the stations of the Sheaf Valley to see Beauchief and Millhouses stations.
We're getting the train to Dore & Totley station. Since the 1980s, it has been a single platform, single track bottleneck on the only line between Sheffield and Manchester. However, work is underway to reinstate the double track and Manchester bound platform. When the station opened, it wasnt the Hope Valley line that it served. The station sat on the Midland Mainline between Sheffield and Chesterfield.
At it's peak, it had 4 platforms covering two main routes out of Sheffield.
We move north a short distance to the site of the former Beauchief & Abbey Dale station. Opening in 1870 as Abbey House, it has also carried the names ‘Beauchief’ and ‘Beauchief and Abbey Dale’. Four platforms with access from the road bridge. The station house remains, but little else. The station closed in 1963.
Next up is the old Millhouses and Ecclesall station, again nothing left other than the old station house. It was here on the site of the Tesco supermarket where engines lined up in the sidings, goods shed and engine shed. Again, nothing remains.
