Property Review
When I travel, especially when solo, I seek places that are amidst nature and away from touristy noise as much as possible. I chose Narayan Niwas looking at the reviews and it was exactly meeting the high praise of guests. You get the feel of a real royal residence here with this 18th century castle and we are lucky that the place is open to stay for tourists. This is the best view in Mahansar easily to soak in the village life around, sights and sounds and beautiful sunrise and sunsets. The room I stayed in (top floor) was basic but had all essential facilities, and of course, great views and aspects of history attached to it. I liked the climbs up and down the castle, reminded me of our own ancestral haveli in Jaipur. The hospitality of owner, Thakur Maheshwar Singh Ji and the staff (Sita, Mangloo) was top notch. I will cherish my long conversations with Thakur Ji who is a storehouse of knowledge and history. The food was home style yet very different and tasty, especially the rice pulao and tomato sabzi, and Dal Bati spread. They also helped design my 2 day itinerary and provided the best guides to me (Rajesh, Mudita) for my exploration of Shekhawati. I was completely taken care of at a personal level right from arriving by train until leaving back for Jaipur.
I recommend Narayan Niwas for anyone looking for history over luxury, authenticity over modern-day décor. Cheers to Mahansar!

I was visiting Shekhawati region for the first time, and my journey started with Ramgarh. Mudita was my guide and she walked me through the heritage town, through roads, havelis both closed and open, chhatris, temples and more. This was a very enriching walk, and it felt like walking through pages of history. While some views and conditions of these old havelis is sad because of the damage being caused, we can still appreciate what was built by the artisans and architects 2-3 centuries ago and teach about value of preserving our rich heritage to future generations. I would like to thank and recommend Mudita for anyone looking to get an in-depth experience of this region. Being a local, she brings an edge with her speech and personal insights. Not even once I felt like I was with a guide who just follow a given script, but her way of guiding was very different and accessible. Despite the weather being hot and humid and local market being closed due to a strike, she went on with lots of energy through the tour. I will cherish this first-hand experience of Shekhawati and will come back for more.

Rajesh Sharma Ji is not just another guide, he is a historian with keen knowledge of Shekhawati. He knows each street, monument, aspect of history, artifact on which he can tell you countless stories. I had the pleasure of spending majority of my Shekhawati trip through places like Mahansar, Nawalgarh, Dundlod, Mandawa, Chudi Ajitgarh over two days and I came out with so much information and knowledge. Not just the monuments, Rajesh Ji never shies from sharing information about the general history of these places, even things like names of trees, the roads, local customs and gods, local culture of alcohol making, food, and much more. He personally knows most haveli owners and caretakers and takes you to places which you would never visit otherwise. I was very lucky to visit a rare haveli with exotic art in Chudi Ajitgarh only through his tireless efforts. Another aspect I liked is that he doesn’t tell fake stories, and also does fact checking and myth busting at many places, he presents the facts and history as it is.
In two days I have acquired so many rich details of the heritage and history of Shekhawati. He is also a great photographer and captures some great shots in still and video and routinely updates on his social media. I wish Rajesh Ji all the best in his study and research areas and would recommend him as a must-have guide for Shekhawati.
