I am still unsure why we should ensure three file descriptors are open in the main function.

it was to make stdin(0),stdout(1),stderr(2) three all are open and connected to the device "console" for the sh process, so we could input from keyboard (qemu virtualize this device and connect it to the "console") and sh could output to "console".

I don't use paper and pen because it brings me joy. It's just faster and more flexible. I use computers when and where they improve my life. Messing with some GUI is not particularly fun IMHO and distracts from the real content.
