A rainy camp in a backcountry hut in the Hakatere Conservation Park in New Zealand. My dog Indi and I escape the heavy rain and wind that is forecast, and take refuge in a basic hut for the night. Having the entire hut to ourselves was such a treat. I hunkered down with a cup of tea, listening to the sound of the rain pelting on the roof of the hut, while watching the crackling fire. Later, when the weather cleared there was even a chance to explore and get views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. This was such an adventure, from the rainy walk in, to falling in the river, to cooking up a delicious meal of dahl, to hunkering down from the weather, to finding a frisbee and enjoying a chilly morning coffee. Join us for a trip to a classic New Zealand public conservation hut and find out what they are really like to stay in, and why this is the first time I have stayed in one on this channel.
