VIDEO NOTES:
I needed a shelter for my new tractor as well as some other farm equipment before we construct the steel warehouse in a couple months. I mainly wanted something to keep our equipment out of the elements, and one that I could easily set up my security system to monitor until the permanent building is complete.
I did a TON of research and ultimately ended up going with the ShelterLogic roundtop style. I'm very happy with the purchase and overall ease of assembly. I will say that I did hours and hours of research watching different videos, reading customer reviews of the product on every website I could find. This helped me out tremendously, and I thought I'd provide a few tips of my own regarding assembling it by yourself.
Assembling this unit is very doable with one person. I'm 5'2" and had no troubles...it just took longer than it would have with 2-3 people (as they recommend).
I've read and watched A LOT of comments and videos complaining about how terribly the instructions were. I'm thinking maybe ShelterLogic upgraded the instructions because I felt like they were very straightforward and simple to understand. I was VERY impressed with how well all the parts were labeled and identified.
I think one thing that sped up my assembly process is that I cataloged ALL the parts before starting, and kept each pile of parts clearly labeled and separate from each other, so at every step I knew EXACTLY which parts to pull and from where.
I will say that there was one mistake in the instructions that caused me a little bit of time, causing me to double-back and fix. There are 2 different styles of 3" long bolts...regular bolts, and then another style with a rounded top. The rounded top 3" bolts were nowhere to be found in my instructions, so I used the regular 3" bolts throughout the build...then towards the end of rib assembly, found myself running out (even with the extras they included).
I took a wild guess and deduced that the round top bolts were meant to be used for the TOP pieces of the MIDDLE RIBS. The instructions say there should be 4 round top bolts (they actually provided me with 5), so my wild guess is that they were meant to be used for the 4 center rib frame pieces.
So I used all 5 for the front door rib frame and 4 middle rib frames, then a regular bolt on the back door rib frame. After swapping those out, I had enough 3" long bolts to finish assembly.
The only other little obstacle I had was having to file down only 2 of the rods where there were some metal burrs...but I purchased a small metal file and fully expected this based on some old reviews where I read this was a bad issue. Thankfully, not too bad on my rods. All the other rods (except maybe 3-4) slid in very smoothly. The few that didn't, a tap with the mallet did the trick.
I'm so happy with how this turned out that I think I might invest in one more for some of the lighter duty items that I need to store so that even when my steel warehouse is done, I'm not having to give up precious space that would be fine in my ShelterLogic.
Based on the feedback of many about the UV damage after about 12-14 months, I will be putting up a "sacrificial" tarp over top of the shelter to preserve the longevity of the ShelterLogic cover. Once I do that, I'll post a separate video about that. I'll also try to post update videos about how well this lasts over time. I'm located in Western NC, so not a lot of extreme weather, but it will get a lot of exposure to sun during the Summer.
Happy building and I hope some of my tips help others!
